Côte Roannaise

The Côte Roannaise is one of the southernmost wine regions in the Loire Valley, located not far from the river’s source. Within the Côte Roannaise appellation, the Domaine des Pothiers stands out in particular.

The vineyards producing Côte Roannaise wines are situated on hillsides overlooking the Loire River, forming the first foothills of the Massif Central. The Côte Roannaise wine region is relatively unknown, with just over 200 hectares of vineyards planted on the best hillsides, at altitudes between 400 and 500 meters.

The soils of the Côte Roannaise, which are very sandy and well-drained, are of granitic origin. They are perfectly suited to the appellation’s signature grape variety: Gamay Saint-Romain. Some clayier plots are dedicated to growing Chardonnay. The quality and distinct character of the wines from this terroir led to their classification as AOC Côte Roannaise as early as 1994.
