Bettane & Desseauve
Although it lives up to its name, it was the land registry that gave this small 1.5-hectare vineyard its name. Legend has it that horses used to come here to drink... Winemade to highlight the fruit’s natural character, it’s perfect for sipping and also pairs well with sunny lunches. It’s ideal for summer barbecues, or simply as an aperitif with friends.

Wine rated 15/20 + Editor's Choice (2013 vintage) (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2026 guide) 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the estate:
Always present on his estate, Jean-Pierre Chevalier has passed on his passion for wine to his two daughters, Caroline and Cécile. They make the most of this limestone slope in Souzay, where the Clos de la Bienboire sets the tone with a delicious red wine, followed by the velvety and refined Vieille Vigne cuvée. The whites are no exception; the wines age beautifully in the bottle, and the older vintages are true benchmarks. With prices that remain attractive, this is one of the most exciting certified organic estates in the region.

Rated wine (2016 guide) 16/20 (2013 vintage) (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2026 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the estate:
Villeneuve has historically been a premier terroir for dry and occasionally sweet Chenin Blanc (Coteaux de Saumur appellation), with remarkable aging potential. Jean-Pierre Chevallier manages the family vineyard—partly situated on the spectacular Souzay hillside—with meticulous care and passion. Faithfully capturing the essence of this limestone slope, this oenologist—trained in the Bordeaux school—crafts consistent, vibrant reds with fresh, lively structure. He has gradually refined his aging techniques and consistently established himself as one of the leading winemakers in the Saumur region. We are thoroughly impressed by his perfectly balanced wines, which offer sensual interpretations of Cabernet Franc without compromising their origins.

Drunk over two days: on the first day, without aeration. A fruity wine that goes down a treat with cold cuts. Surprisingly rich for a casual wine—almost silky. The next day, it leaned more toward the stone than the fruit, but it remained just as easy to drink.
