Bettane & Desseauve
Even though it's aptly named, it was the land registry that bestowed the name on this small 1.5-hectare estate. It is said that horses used to come here to drink... Vinified with an eye for fruit, it's a wine to be savored as a treat, and can also be enjoyed with a sunny lunch. It's perfect for summer grilling, or simply as an aperitif with friends.

Rated 15/20 + Coup de Coeur (Vintage 2013) (Very good wine)
Domaine rated (guide 2025) 4*Stars (Top-quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)
About the domain :
Jean-Pierre Chevalier has passed on his passion for wine to his two daughters, Caroline and Cécile. They make the most of the Souzay limestone hillside, where Clos de la Bienboire opens the ball with a delicious red, followed by the velvety, refined cuvée Vieille Vigne. The whites are not to be outdone: the wines evolve perfectly in bottle and the older vintages are benchmarks. With prices still attractive, this is one of the region's most exciting certified organic properties.

Wine rated (guide 2016) 16/20 (Vintage 2013) (Very good wine)
Domaine rated (guide 2025) 2*Stars (These great estates, often endowed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the domain :
Villeneuve has historically been a great terroir for dry and sometimes sweet chenin blanc (Coteaux de Saumur appellation), with remarkable ageing potential. Jean-Pierre Chevallier manages the family vineyard, partly located on the spectacular Côte de Souzay, with passion and exacting standards. This oenologist, trained at the Bordeaux school of winemaking, is able to translate the expression of this limestone hillside into homogeneous, colorful, fresh reds. He has progressively refined his ageing techniques, consistently establishing himself as one of the greatest stylists on the Saumur landscape. We are totally convinced by his perfectly calibrated wines, which deliver sensual interpretations of Cabernet Franc without denying their origin.

drunk over 2 days: 1st day without aeration, a fruity wine that really drinks on its own with cold meats, surprisingly full-bodied for a "friend's" wine, almost silky. The next day, more stone than fruit, but still very drinkable.
