Vallée d'Ica
Ica is Peru’s leading wine-growing region, and the potential of its terroirs is exceptional. This is because, in prehistoric times, during the great thaw, enormous and devastating mudflows slid down the Andes mountain range—all the way to the Pacific Ocean—shaping the valley’s current landscape as they went. This shaped the valley’s subsoil, creating a stony and sandy foundation. The result is superb alluvial soil.
In addition to reds and whites, the range of wines from the Ica Valley is very diverse, ranging from fairly sweet whites to semi-dry rosés, as well as fortified and sparkling wines. For reds, Mediterranean grape varieties such as Mourvèdre and Carignan find excellent expression in this terroir alongside the more classic Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, with powerful tannins and beautiful aromatic complexity. As for whites, Sémillon, Chardonnay, Chenin, and Sauvignon are among the most prized for their very fruity aromas and their ability to withstand sometimes very strong winds.
