About the estate:

Located on Courthézon’s finest terroirs, the Domaine de la Janasse—the pride of the Sabon family—has stood out for over 40 years as one of the appellation’s leading producers. Christophe Sabon produces Côtes-du-Rhône wines of the highest caliber, with a rare depth of character. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are expressed through various cuvées: Chaupin, from a cooler terroir with a distinctly Burgundian style, and the Vieilles-Vignes cuvée, which is sunnier and more refined. Finally, the whites—though often overshadowed by the reds—are just as highly recommended. The entire range is impeccable, and the top cuvées rank among the appellation’s finest.

About the wine:

A classic Châteauneuf—solid, well-crafted, and technically precise. It is well-rounded, with ample, ripe tannins and a firm, dense core of concentrated black fruit leading to a long finish. The wine is introspective and young, and will need time to come together. But it possesses the freshness, balance, and power necessary for long-term aging. A wine that offers good value for the price.

About the estate:

A regular in the Guide, often highly ranked for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône, and IGP wines. The 90-hectare vineyard, spread across numerous plots, is managed by Christophe Sabon and his sister Isabelle, the children of Aimé Sabon, who founded the estate in 1973. The estate was expanded in 2015 with the purchase of Clos Saint-Antonin and its 15 hectares of vineyards in the town of Jonquières.

About the wine:

The nose is still a bit closed, with good maturity and a very classic aromatic profile. On the palate, it has good body but is still a bit stiff, with firm tannins. We have no concerns about its positive development.

About the estate:

This large estate, which has belonged to the Sabon family for generations, ranks among the elite of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are primarily located in the commune of Courthézon, with a variety of plots and soil types reflected in the estate’s various cuvées. The estate also produces splendid (and high-volume) Côtes-du-Rhône wines from vineyards adjacent to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. With often very high levels of ripeness, the wines are opulent in style, sometimes a bit too warm in sunny vintages. On the other hand, the tannins and textures are always exceptionally refined. In recent vintages, the wines have been less focused on richness and are slightly more approachable.

About the wine:

An excellent example of a ripe, succulent, and opulent Châteauneuf that nevertheless retains all its pedigree and freshness. Soft yet firm tannins support juicy aromas of cherry, licorice, and wild herbs, all enhanced by a hint of graphite. It displays impressive fruity purity, pleasantly highlighted by the oak. The finish is slightly chalky and lingers for a good length of time. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. Enjoy now through 2035.

A very rich nose of black fruit, garrigue, and licorice. The palate is dense and chewy, with plenty of firm tannins. Full-bodied and rich, with a savory note beneath the sweet black fruit. Young and raw, but with a long finish and good fruit concentration. It needs time.

Orange blossom, raspberry, strawberry, licorice, and thyme set the stage for the delicious 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Inviting and vibrant, this full-bodied 2022 retains its freshness and concludes with a juicy, polished finish—a delight for the palate.

A full-bodied nose of red plums and candied oranges, with notes of cinnamon and allspice. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with plenty of powdery tannins that gently develop through to the long, moderately firm finish. This cuvée is made from 70% Grenache and 15% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. Enjoy now or cell it.

About the wine:

A blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and various other grape varieties, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a deeper ruby color and offers an incredible bouquet of red and black fruits, floral incense, Provençal garrigue, and spices. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, with great elegance and ripe tannins, it is entirely in keeping with the vintage’s pure, elegant, and consistent style and has much to offer. Best enjoyed within the next 10 to 12 years.
