James Suckling
"A Viognier that sings!"
"Grown on a steep muscovite granite hillside in a place called Chanson, bordering the stream of the same name, this Condrieu shines with a golden glow. Its name is as inspiring as its lovely aromas of lily of the valley, orchard fruits, vanilla, and brioche. Lively on the attack, impeccably fresh and very fragrant, the palate shows depth and elegance, served by a long aniseed finish reminiscent of wild fennel. A high-flying bottle, both lively and sophisticated." (Le Guide Hachette 2026)

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)
About the estate:
In just a few vintages, Stéphane Montez has established himself as a leading winemaker in the northern part of the valley, in the Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, and Côte Rôtie appellations. Grapes harvested when fully ripe, sometimes even a little overripe, produce wines with great power and intensity on the palate. Unfortunately, the estate did not present its wines at our tastings this year.

About the estate:
The origins of the estate date back to the 16th century; the Montez family has been growing vines here since 1741. Stéphane Montez took over from his father Antoine in 1999 and is now the ninth generation of winegrowers. Today, he manages a 40-hectare vineyard in conversion to organic farming (Cornas, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and IGP), located on the heights of Chavanay at an altitude of 320 meters. A sure bet in the northern valley.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 94/100
Rated estate (2023 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing good-quality wines; you won't be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)
About the estate:
Since 1997, Stéphane Montez has been cultivating a vineyard planted on beautiful hillsides less than 2 kilometers from his cellar. This rare estate produces 40% white wines. For reds, the estate has a superb plot of old Syrah vines in Saint-Joseph, which produces a generous and delicious Cuvée du Papy. The Côte-Rôtie wines are better controlled, based on more refined aging techniques.

About wine:
A lively, dense, and energetic Viognier with aromas of apricot, peach skin, and a hint of floral honey. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, with a concentrated core of cooked lemon. Textured and intense, with a caressing sensation and a long, seductive finish. Enjoy now or cellar.
