“To honor his father Antoine, Stéphane Montez selected the finest slopes on the northern edge of the appellation and opted for extended aging in his finest barrels. The result is thrilling, with a ripe nose of red currant jelly, blond tobacco, and sweet spices; a silky mouthfeel; well-rounded tannins; and a creamy finish brimming with peppery fruit and licorice notes. It comes close to the “ Favorite.” (Le Guide Hachette 2027)

About the estate:

The estate’s origins date back to the 16th century; the Montez family has been growing grapes there since 1741. Stéphane Montez, who took over from his father Antoine in 1999, represents the ninth generation of winemakers. Today, he manages a 42-hectare vineyard (Cornas, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and IGP) situated on the heights of Chavanay at an elevation of 320 meters. A sure bet in the northern valley.

The 2023 Saint-Joseph “Cuvée du Papy” is made from vines ranging in age from 25 to 85 years, planted on granitic soils. It reveals a very floral and elegant bouquet, with aromas of dark fruits and violets. Medium- to full-bodied, juicy, and round, it offers lovely savory notes and depth, enhanced by a subtle peppery note. Well-balanced and expressive, it should age beautifully for about ten years.

Since 1997, Stéphane Montez has been cultivating a vineyard planted on steep hillsides located less than 2 kilometers from his winery, producing wines that beautifully reflect the identity of their terroirs. This rare estate produces 40% white wines, including a superb range of Condrieu wines. As for reds, the estate owns a plot of old Syrah vines in Saint-Joseph, which yield the generous and rich Cuvée du Papy, as well as fine vineyards in Côte-Rôtie.

About the wine:

A wonderful wine: the 2023 Saint Joseph Cuvée Du Papy offers aromas of ripe blackberries, red plums, peppery herbs, and violets on the nose, with hints of cookie-like spices. On the palate, it is medium-bodied to full-bodied, round and supple, with ripe, supple tannins and a lovely finish. Enjoy this undeniably delicious wine over the next 10 to 12 years.
