"The estate's premier cru, La Mouline embodies the foundation of its tradition of excellence."

"Aromas of black raspberries, wildflowers, and bacon fat emanate from the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Mouline, which has an exotic yet dark, rich, and powerful profile. Composed of 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier, and aged for 42 months in new oak barrels, it offers great depth on the palate, full-bodied richness and ripe tannins, while retaining the classic character and sensuality of La Mouline. Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2023 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)

About the estate:

Marcel and Philippe Guigal jointly run the successful family business, which since 2017 has expanded significantly in the south, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape (77 hectares of land), supplemented in spring 2022 by the 100 hectares of Château d'Aquéria. And still the rich parcels in Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. Wine lovers can taste some of the greatest vintages in the valley, not to mention the brilliant Côtes-du-Rhône, in all three colors, and Tavel, Philippe's favorite wine.

Decanter

Wine rated (2023 guide) 96/100

About wine:

Finely spiced, very true to itself with its tobacco leaf aromas. Particularly salty this year and detailed, not as lush as some 2022s, which is not a bad thing. Exuberant and very classic, the tannins are slightly dry and the finish is currently full of oak smoke. Not overly alcoholic, although the fruit is extremely ripe. From the Côte Blonde vineyard. At the beginning of its 40 months in new French oak barrels.

Rated estate (2023 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

In addition to its "treasures" in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Condrieu, Guigal owns two beautiful plots in Saint-Joseph: the "Saint-Joseph" locality, which gave its name to the appellation, and the Vignes de l'Hospice, planted on a very steep granite hillside, already identified by the monks of the Hospice de Tournon and with a geological formation similar to the famous Bessards hill in Hermitage.

5-star rated estate (Outstanding production)

About the estate:

An iconic figure in the northern Rhône, Marcel Guigal is both a major wine merchant and a large landowner. In the latter capacity, he cultivates famous Côte Rôtie vineyards such as La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne, not to mention La Doriane in Condrieu. A tireless worker with an insatiable intellectual curiosity, he succeeded his father, Etienne. Philippe Guigal, an oenologist representing the third generation, continues the work alongside his father, still maintaining this duality of property and trade. The vinification of the northern appellations all takes place in Ampuis.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

The most iconic winery in the northern Rhône Valley needs no introduction. Under this entity, we bring together wines from our own vineyards, which we separate from our wine trading activities. This includes the famous trio from Côte-Rôtie: La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne, the first two being brands and the last a registered terroir. Added to these are the Château d'Ampuis cuvée and the Condrieu La Doriane. In addition to these star wines, there is the Vignes de l'Hospice cuvée, a Saint-Joseph located on a magnificent terroir, as well as a few large plots in Hermitage from which the Ex-Voto cuvée is produced. Marcel Guigal is ably supported by his son Philippe, who seems to be gently changing the style of the wines, with a slightly less dominant approach to aging. Needless to say, all these wines are made for long-term aging.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 17,5/20

About wine:

Attractive nose, slightly shy. The palate shows good concentration and density, as well as a structured mid-palate that reveals a nice touch of acidity throughout the tasting. The oak is toasted and clearly needs time. The tannins are already superbly polished and integrated. This wine needs to age to harmonize.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 94-96/100

About wine:

The Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2022 is characterized by intense, pronounced flavors of raspberry, black cherry, Bourbon vanilla, crushed violet, flowers, and cedar. Medium-bodied and refreshing, the 2022 vintage promises to be a classic La Mouline, full of energy and finesse. Solidly structured and perfectly balanced, it offers excellent length on the palate with a complex finish.
