"A rough diamond from an iconic plot in the appellation"
"Darker and more introverted, the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Turque is characterized by aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, crushed stone, and liquid violet, complemented by more distinctive notes of game, smoke, and black olive when aerated. Composed of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier, and aged for 42 months in new oak barrels, it has a more structured and concentrated profile than La Mouline, with a full-bodied richness, impressive concentration, and a beautiful finish. Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2023 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)
About the estate:
Marcel and Philippe Guigal jointly run the successful family business, which since 2017 has expanded significantly in the south, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape (77 hectares of land), supplemented in spring 2022 by the 100 hectares of Château d'Aquéria. And still the rich parcels in Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. Wine lovers can taste some of the greatest vintages in the valley, not to mention the brilliant Côtes-du-Rhône, in all three colors, and Tavel, Philippe's favorite wine.

About wine:
A particularly dark La Turque this year, with aromas of black fruits, licorice, and smoke. Full-bodied, ripe but fresh, with well-integrated oak. Rich in blackberry skin and oak tannins, it is solid, very dense, and spicy on the palate. Powerful but fresh, intended for long aging, it comes from vines in the Côte Brune, planted by Marcel Guigal in 1980 after having been abandoned since 1935. La Turque is a central part of the Côte Brune, covering less than one hectare. It will be aged for 40 months in new French oak barrels.

About the estate:
In addition to its "treasures" in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Condrieu, Guigal owns two beautiful plots in Saint-Joseph: the "Saint-Joseph" locality, which gave its name to the appellation, and the Vignes de l'Hospice, planted on a very steep granite hillside, already identified by the monks of the Hospice de Tournon and with a geological formation similar to the famous Bessards hill in Hermitage.

5-star rated estate (Outstanding production)
About the estate:
An iconic figure in the northern Rhône, Marcel Guigal is both a major wine merchant and a large landowner. In the latter capacity, he cultivates famous Côte Rôtie vineyards such as La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne, not to mention La Doriane in Condrieu. A tireless worker with an insatiable intellectual curiosity, he succeeded his father, Etienne. Philippe Guigal, an oenologist representing the third generation, continues the work alongside his father, still maintaining this duality of property and trade. The vinification of the northern appellations all takes place in Ampuis.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the estate:
The most iconic winery in the northern Rhône Valley needs no introduction. Under this entity, we bring together wines from our own vineyards, which we separate from our wine trading activities. This includes the famous trio from Côte-Rôtie: La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne, the first two being brands and the last a registered terroir. Added to these are the Château d'Ampuis cuvée and the Condrieu La Doriane. In addition to these star wines, there is the Vignes de l'Hospice cuvée, a Saint-Joseph located on a magnificent terroir, as well as a few large plots in Hermitage from which the Ex-Voto cuvée is produced. Marcel Guigal is ably supported by his son Philippe, who seems to be gently changing the style of the wines, with a slightly less dominant approach to aging. Needless to say, all these wines are made for long-term aging.

About wine:
A sanguine note on the nose, red and black fruits, a distinct note of five spices and star anise. There is density and power, superbly rounded tannins and a deep minerality beneath the gravel—crushed violets lurk discreetly beneath a veil of oak, followed by a touch of licorice.

About wine:
The magnificent Côte-Rôtie La Turque 2022 exudes aromas of espresso, blackcurrant, black cherry, pencil shavings, crushed violet, and wood smoke. Dark and intense, this La Turque is remarkably charming, much more so than the more muscular 2019 or 2020 vintages. Nevertheless, the La Turque 2022 is structured by a complex tannic network and is characterized by high aromatic concentration, with a complex finish and beautiful persistence.
