“A true ode to Syrah from the steepest slopes of the Fongeant hillside”

“The first La Reynarde 2022 Côte-Rôtie reveals intense aromas of espresso, blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, crushed violet, graphite, and cedar. Medium-bodied and concentrated, it offers a perfect balance between intense flavors and matching freshness. Structured and round, La Reynarde is a wonderful addition to what is now known as the ‘La-La-La-La family.’ Speaking of family, this new wine is a tribute to Philippe Guigal’s two sons, Étienne and Charles, both born in 2010—the very year permission was granted to plant and build the new vineyard. Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2023 guide) 5*Stars (Exceptional producers, those who represent the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)

About the estate:

Marcel and Philippe Guigal jointly run the successful family business, which since 2017 has expanded significantly in the south, to Châteauneuf-du-Pape (77 hectares of owned vineyards), supplemented in the spring of 2022 by the 100 hectares of Château d’Aquéria. And, as always, the rich portfolio of vineyards in Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. Wine lovers can sample some of the valley’s greatest vintages, not to mention the brilliant Côtes-du-Rhône in all three red, white, and rosé varieties, and Tavel, Philippe’s favorite wine.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

A very floral profile, with notes of roses and potpourri. Smooth and juicy, easy to drink, with fairly pronounced tannins, yet without excessive power or robustness. Slightly more fluid than Guigal’s other Côte-Rôties, it is not as concentrated as La Turque but more so than La Mouline. A fresh and fairly natural expression, low in acidity but nonetheless very good. It has aged well so far, a process that will last 40 months in new oak barrels like the other La Las wines. The 1.5-hectare site located in the Fongeant hamlet was planted over four years, with the first planting dating back to 2019. All grapes are harvested in whole clusters like La Landonne, but the extraction is more traditional, with manual punching down. A promising first vintage.

About the estate:

In addition to its “treasures” in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Condrieu, the Guigal estate owns two fine vineyards in Saint-Joseph: the locality known as “Saint-Joseph,” which gave its name to the appellation, and the Vignes de l’Hospice, planted on a very steep granite hillside, already identified by the monks of the Hospice de Tournon and featuring a geological formation similar to that of the famous Bessards hill in Hermitage.

5-Star Rated Estate (Outstanding Production)

About the estate:

A leading figure in the Northern Rhône, Marcel Guigal is both a major wine merchant and a prominent winegrower. In the latter capacity, he cultivates famous vineyards in Côte Rôtie, such as La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne, not to mention La Doriane in Condrieu. A tireless worker with an insatiable intellectual curiosity, he succeeded his father, Etienne. Philippe Guigal, an oenologist and representative of the third generation, continues the family legacy alongside his father, maintaining this dual focus on estate-owned vineyards and wine trading. The winemaking for the northern appellations all takes place in Ampuis.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

The most iconic winery in the northern Rhône Valley needs no introduction. Under this label, we bring together wines from our own vineyards, which we thus distinguish from our wine merchant operations. This includes the famous Côte-Rôtie trio: La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne; the first two are brand names, while the last is a registered terroir. Added to these are the Château d’Ampuis cuvée and the Condrieu La Doriane. In addition to these star wines, there is the Vignes de l’Hospice cuvée, a Saint-Joseph situated on a magnificent terroir, as well as several prime plots in Hermitage from which the Ex-Voto cuvée is produced. Marcel Guigal is firmly supported by his son Philippe, who seems to be gently shifting the style of the wines, with aging that strikes us as slightly less dominant. Needless to say, all these wines are built for long-term aging.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 18/20

About the wine:

This one is quite different from the other La La's. The nose is ripe, yet crisp, fresh, and very spicy. On the palate, it offers savory notes, with peppery, complex, and refined tannins. The oak nicely complements the wine’s savory character. A captivating freshness gives way to a good concentration of fruit and waxy rosehip. There’s beautiful precision here as well.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 96-98/100

Rated: Recommended

About the wine:

The first vintage of this cuvée, the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Reynarde comes from the Fongeant vineyard, located just above the Côte Brune. The grapes are not destemmed, and the wine was vinified solely through punch-down (similar to La Turque) and undergoes the same four-year aging in new barrels as the other single-vintage cuvées. Aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, smoked meat, crushed stone, and graphite characterize the nose, with notes of black olives and iron emerging upon aeration. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with a beautiful texture and ripe, polished tannins. This wine clearly deserves its place in the lineup and is on its way to becoming a brilliant, structured, and age-worthy Côte Rôtie.
