“A captivating Syrah from century-old vines”

Partially destemmed, the old Syrah vines have shaped this superb 2021 vintage, with its nose of ripe fruit and licorice. Indeed, this vineyard parcel of century-old vines on the Côte Brune, with its deep soil, is the birthplace of thiscaptivating Syrah, which expresses itself with power and silkiness.

Wine noted (guide 2021) 2* Stars (Vintage 2018) (Remarkable wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

To revive the Seyssuel vineyards located upstream from Vienne, three renowned winemakers—Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard, and François Villard—founded this company in 1996. It produces fine estate wines with IGP designation in Seyssuel, single-vineyard selections from northern AOCs, and merchant wines from throughout the valley.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

The trio of Villard, Cuilleron, and Gaillard launched the Vins de Vienne venture in the late 1990s. Initially, the goal was to breathe new life into the superb, forgotten terroirs of Seyssuel, one of the Rhône Valley’s earliest vineyards: of the 16 hectares of vineyards, 11 were planted there between 1996 and 2001. Over the years, the range has expanded through the purchase of grapes. While the wines from the Seyssuel terroirs remain admirable and define the estate, the other vintages seem less convincing to us, leading us to remove the star from the estate this year.
