"The red wine range begins with the classic Esus, Duché d'Uzès 2016, composed mainly of Syrah but also Grenache (30%), Cinsault (15%), and Carignan (10%). Notes of green pepper, plums, blackberries, and undergrowth give this wine a full-bodied, concentrated flavor with a lovely texture. The 2016 vintage is full of charm." (Jeb Dunnuck 2017)

Rated estate (2019 guide) 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production, consistent with what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Nicolas Souchon is the cellar master at Clos Saint-Jean in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He has also created his own estate, Mas des Volques, near Nîmes on the terroirs of the Duché d'Uzés. The Volques were the first tribe to populate the Mediterranean basin, long before the Romans. Nicolas drew on Philippe Cambie's expert advice to create two cuvées: Volcae, made from very old Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan vines, aged in fine oak barrels; and Alba-Dolia, based on Roussanne and Viognier, a delicious white wine for fine dining. The first vintages are already reaching a very high standard. Definitely one to watch.
