"The red wine lineup begins with the classic Esus, Duché d'Uzès 2016, made primarily from Syrah but also featuring Grenache (30%), Cinsault (15%), and Carignan (10%). Notes of green pepper, plums, blackberries, and forest floor create a full-bodied, concentrated wine with a lovely texture. The 2016 vintage is full of charm.” (Jeb Dunnuck 2017)

Rated estate (2019 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Nicolas Souchon is the cellar master at Clos Saint-Jean in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He has also established his own estate, Le Mas des Volques, near Nîmes in the terroirs of the Duchy of Uzès. The Volques were the first tribe to settle in the Mediterranean basin, long before the Romans. Nicolas drew on the expert advice of Philippe Cambie to create two cuvées: Volcae, made from very old Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan vines and aged in large oak barrels, and an Alba-Dolia, centered around Roussanne and Viognier, a delicious white wine perfect for fine dining. The first vintages are already reaching a very high standard. One to watch, then.
