Bettane & Desseauve

A superb aroma of pomegranate combined with well-balanced power. The wine’s character comes to the fore on the palate, with full-bodied, velvety tannins giving way to a reserved finish. Sumptuous.” (The Bettane & Desseauve Guide to French Wines 2017)

4-Star Rated Estate (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the wine:

A superb aroma of pomegranate combined with well-balanced intensity. The wine’s pedigree comes to the fore on the palate, with full-bodied, velvety tannins giving way to a reserved finish. Sumptuous.

About the estate:

Dominique Ay is Gigondas’s “wise elder” in the noblest sense of the word. A distinguished president of the appellation for many years, he is one of the leading figures of the Southern Rhône. With his deep understanding of Grenache, he brings out the full character of the clay-limestone soils of the Parties terroir. The aging process then takes on its full meaning, as the wines are refined in large casks for a minimum of 24 months. His children have now taken up the torch, with Anne-Sophie in charge of sales and Christophe overseeing the winery and vineyard—no small feat! With a timeless style, the estate’s sole wine is known for its longevity. Very powerful and structured, even firm in its youth, it develops a silky texture and perfect balance. The 2016, tasted straight from the tank, should produce a truly exceptional bottle…

Rated Estate (2024 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

Like all the estate's wines, this 2014 vintage will continue to age well for a good fifteen years.

About the estate:

The estate’s wine is the quintessential example of a fine Gigondas: full-bodied, robust, and unpretentious. With a firm, dense structure, the best vintages require four to five years of aging to fully open up. From that point on, they develop beautiful complexity over time and continue to improve for ten to twenty years.

Beautifully aromatic, powerful, with supple tannins but slightly alcoholic (perhaps opened too young)

Paired with a superb rib of beef, this wine is a nectar that glides down the throat with sheer pleasure. Opened an hour beforehand but not decanted, I loved it so much I could have drunk it straight from the bottle. It’s at its peak right now but can still age for a few more years.
