Wine Spectator

"The 2011 solar wine, Favorite the previous edition, is succeeded by a less ambitious 2012 vintage, which nevertheless bears a family resemblance to its 'big brother' with its rich, full, and silky character and its concentrated and warm fruitiness. " (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2015). A straightforward, firm wine with a delicious balance between fruit and spice, a touch of oak, and great length in both structure and aroma... A Saint-Joseph of choice!

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

A new wind is blowing at Vidal-Fleury. Antoine Dupré has replaced Guy Sarton du Jonchay at the helm of the oldest wine merchant in the northern Rhône (founded in 1781), now owned by the Guigal family but managed independently. New commercial ambitions are emerging, along with a gradual shift in style in the cellar, which is beginning to show in the range on offer. Watch this space.

About wine:

The oldest wine merchant in the Rhône region, founded in 1781 and quickly gaining renown – Thomas Jefferson held a memorable banquet there in 1787. Owned by Guigal since 1986, it boasts a monumental cellar, whose architecture was inspired by the Egyptian site of Saqqara.
The sunny 2011 vintage, Favorite the previous edition, is followed by a less ambitious 2012 vintage, which nevertheless bears a family resemblance to its "big brother" with its rich, full, and silky character and its concentrated and warm fruitiness.

About the estate:

About the estate:

Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury is the oldest winery in the Rhône Valley still in operation. It was bought by the Guigal family in the early 1980s and boasts modern, high-performance facilities, as well as autonomy in its management and winemaking. The range is extensive and covers most of the major appellations of the Rhône Valley. The wines are now reliable, in a rather classic style.
