Vidal-Fleury
30 km south of Lyon, on the banks of the Rhône, stands the oldest winery in the Rhône Valley still in operation, nestled in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie vineyards: Maison Vidal-Fleury. Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury quickly gained international renown. Thomas Jefferson’s visit in 1787 was a defining moment in its history. Beginning in the 1920s, the winery began exploring other terroirs in the Rhône Valley. By the mid-20th century, Vidal-Fleury had become the iconic winery of Côte-Rôtie. In 2008, with the opening of a new cellar dedicated to aging, Vidal-Fleury embarked on a new phase of development. The house has endured through the centuries thanks to the tenacity of men who were deeply passionate about wine. Today, Vidal-Fleury boasts no fewer than 19 of the most prestigious appellations in the Rhône Valley.

Four key processes underpin wine production: the vineyard, winemaking, aging, and bottling. But not all of them involve the same challenges. Vidal-Fleury believes that only the vineyard and aging truly shape a wine’s character. Winemaking and bottling must be executed with excellence but contribute less to distinguishing one terroir from another. The exceptional origins of the grapes and the patience of the aging process are what define the quality of Vidal-Fleury wines.
