Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2015 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)

About the estate:

The young and energetic Philippe Lejeune puts his entrepreneurial talent to work not only for his magnificent estate but also for the appellation as a whole, and together with Stéphane Derenoncourt, his wine consultant, they form a remarkable duo that is restoring the expected class to this great wine. With 65 hectares, it is the largest biodynamic vineyard in Cahors. Beware of clichés: this “great wine of Cahors” does not reveal itself immediately. Like great Bordeaux wines, it is built to blossom over time. The entry-level vintages still need refinement.

Wine rated (2015 guide) 15,5/20 (Good wine)

Rated estate (2015 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

Chambert Gourmand Red 2012 is a truly outstanding wine, a floral, approachable, and flavorful expression of highland Malbec.

About the estate:

A historic estate in Cahors, renowned since the 19th century, Chambert was acquired in 2007 by Philippe Lejeune, a native of the region and a successful entrepreneur in the IT services sector. He spared no expense in restoring the château to its former glory. He has made a firm commitment to certified organic farming and is now pursuing biodynamic practices. The renowned consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt provides guidance here. The latest vintages are of a very high standard, and this essential estate in the Cahors landscape has undoubtedly not finished surprising us.

A lovely contrast between the very fruity, rich nose and the silky, smooth palate—a wine worth discovering

A tart attack and a harsh finish... During our tasting, we didn't like this wine.
