"A great entry-level model"

"The Gayraud family seems to have built a bridge between the worlds of Mendoza and Cahors with this cuvée, which is mainly made from Malbec—dark juice and jam, lively tannins, a little touch of Cahors in the bite of bitterness, and the pull of tannins that are still a little knotty but become soft as modeling clay under the flood of fruit. And a little black hint of medicinal elderberry, just in case you thought it was too easy." (Jancis Robinson 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

A classic property of the appellation, producing robust, tannic Cahors wines, at the expense of a certain austerity in the basic wines. The Expression cuvée, made from the best vines on the third terrace, is of exemplary consistency.

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly awarded by the guide)

About the estate:

According to legend, the branches of a hundred-year-old oak tree provided shelter for the romantic trysts of a beautiful woman named Martine. In 2016, Alain Gayraud handed over the reins to his children Lise and Benjamin, who brought with them a wealth of experience gained abroad, to run this estate with ancient origins (1883), located on the edge of the Lot region. The vineyard covers 37.5 hectares (in conversion to organic farming), facing south. A pillar of the Cahors appellation.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 92/100

Rated estate (2026 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing good-quality wines; you won't be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About wine:

Malbec shows perfect precision in the 2021 Cahors, shaped by the coolness of the year. Its incredible charm is only just beginning to soften.

About the estate:

The future of the Gayraud family estate is now in the hands of Alain's children, Benjamin and Lise. The new generation brings greater energy and modernity to the wines, which focus on fruitiness. We must applaud the progress made by this large 37.5-hectare estate which, aided by climate change, is making the most of its terroir located on the three terraces of the Lot.

Rated Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Wine Enthusiast)

About wine:

This balanced blend from the fourth generation of the Gayraud family, with 10% Merlot to soften the 90% Malbec, offers aromas of spice and vanilla and rich, dark tannins. It is a solid wine, with black fruit and a dry core that promises to age well. Drink from 2026 onwards.
