"A great Malbec!"

"Two years of luxurious aging does not prevent the fruit from expressing itself in this pure Malbec, which opens with notes of cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. The palate is well-structured, firm, dense, and long, without lacking freshness. An intense and serious expression of Malbec. For the cellar." (Le Guide Hachette 2023).

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

A classic property of the appellation, producing robust, tannic Cahors wines, at the expense of a certain austerity in the basic wines. The Expression cuvée, made from the best vines on the third terrace, is of exemplary consistency.

Wine rating (2023 guide) 2 stars (Outstanding wine)

Rated estate (2023 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About wine:

Two years of luxurious aging does not prevent the fruit from expressing itself in this pure Malbec, which opens with notes of cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. The palate is well-structured, firm, dense, and long, without lacking freshness. An intense and serious expression of Malbec. For the cellar.

About the estate:

According to legend, the branches of a hundred-year-old oak tree provided shelter for the romantic trysts of a beautiful woman named Martine. In 2016, Alain Gayraud handed over the reins to his children Lise and Benjamin, who brought with them a wealth of experience gained abroad, to run this estate with ancient origins (1883), located on the edge of the Lot-et-Garonne department. The vineyard covers 37.5 hectares, facing south. A pillar of the Cahors appellation.

Wine rating (2024 guide) 91/100 (Outstanding wine)

About wine:

The 2020 Château Lamartine Expression evokes aromas of oak, toast, smoke, and black berries. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, dense and rich, it is a concentrated, deep, and pure Malbec, framed by controlled power and velvety tannins. It finishes with a spicy and smoky finish, with a certain freshness and tension. This muscular, well-crafted Cahors, made from vines planted on clay-limestone soils, was macerated for 40 days and aged for 20 months in new oak barrels.

About the estate:

The future of the Gayraud family estate is now in the hands of Alain's children, Benjamin and Lise. This classic estate produces wines that are well-balanced and true to the Cahors style. The new generation brings more energy and modernity to the vintages, which focus on fruitiness.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Wine Enthusiast)

About wine:

Aged in new barrels, this wine is powerful and rich in black fruit flavors. It has a balanced character, with dense fruit and acidity. It requires long aging and should be drunk from 2026 onwards.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 16,5/20

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended

About wine:

Creamy aromas of mocha and blueberry muffins. Juicy ripe blueberries, lots of woody vanilla and texture, and medicinal notes of not quite ripe sloes. Licorice. Lots of dominant tannins—really drying on the palate. But it's a baby, and it's clear that these vines produce a very concentrated wine. It needs time and to be paired with a meal.
