Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

A classic estate in the appellation, where robust, tannic Cahors wines are produced, albeit at the cost of a certain austerity in the entry-level wines. The “Expression” cuvée, made from the best vines on the third terrace, is of exemplary consistency.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine rated (2022 guide) 2*Stars (Outstanding Wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

The high quality standards applied during the harvest and the precision of the aging process are evident in this cuvée. Indeed, the nose readily reveals the black fruit and violet aromas characteristic of the grape variety, along with subtle vanilla notes from the oak. Round and persistent on the palate, it is velvety, with balsamic and licorice notes on the finish.

About the estate:

According to legend, the branches of a century-old oak tree here once provided a secluded spot for the romantic trysts of a beautiful woman named Martine. Since 2016, Alain Gayraud has handed the reins to his children, Lise and Benjamin—who bring extensive experience from abroad—to lead this historic estate (founded in 1883), located on the edge of the Lot department. The vineyard covers 37.5 hectares (in the process of converting to organic farming) and faces due south. A pillar of the Cahors appellation.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 93/100

Rated estate (2026 guide) 1*Star (Rising stars or high-quality winemakers producing wines of a good standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the wine:

Expression offers a more opulent mouthfeel and oak notes that still dominate the 2019, but the purity of the tannins lingers in the finish.

About the estate:

The future of the Gayraud family estate now lies in the hands of Benjamin and Lise, Alain’s children. The new generation brings greater vitality and modernity to the wines, which focus on fruit. We must commend the progress of this great 37.5-hectare estate, which—aided by climate change—is making the most of its terroir, situated on the three terraces of the Lot.
