"A must-have at a great price!"

“This full-bodied, age-worthy Malbec, with a touch of Tannat, has been aged for two years in barrels and casks. The nose is fresh and appealing, evoking blackcurrant and flowers, accented by oriental spices and cocoa. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and concentrated without being excessive, supported by elegant tannins and a subtle acidity that nicely extends the finish. A perfect blend of power and finesse.” (Le Guide Hachette 2025).

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though a bit more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

A classic estate in the appellation, where robust, tannic Cahors wines are produced, albeit at the cost of a certain austerity in the entry-level wines. The “Expression” cuvée, made from the best vines on the third terrace, is of exemplary consistency.

About the wine:

A fresh, elegant, and lively nose. Aromas of black fruits that reveal richness and ripeness. The finish offers a hint of minerality, along with great purity and plenty of vibrancy. An energetic wine, with lovely momentum and a vibrant finish featuring notes of blackberry. The whole is very well crafted, clearly by a passionate winemaker.

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine rated (2025 guide) 2* Stars (Remarkable Wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

This full-bodied, age-worthy Malbec, blended with a touch of Tannat (10%), has been aged for two years in barrels and casks. The nose, fresh and inviting, evokes blackcurrant and flowers, accented by oriental spices and cocoa. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and concentrated without being excessive, supported by elegant tannins and a subtle acidity that nicely extends the finish. A perfect blend of power and finesse.

About the estate:

According to legend, the branches of a century-old oak tree here once provided a secluded spot for a beautiful woman named Martine to meet her suitors. Since 2016, Alain Gayraud has handed the reins to his children, Lise and Benjamin—who bring extensive international experience to the table—to lead this historic estate (founded in 1883), located on the edge of the Lot department. The vineyard covers 37.5 hectares (in the process of converting to organic farming) and faces due south. A pillar of the Cahors appellation.

Rated estate (2026 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or high-quality winemakers producing wines of a good standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

The future of the Gayraud family estate now lies in the hands of Benjamin and Lise, Alain’s children. The new generation brings greater vitality and modernity to the wines, which focus on fruit. We must commend the progress of this great 37.5-hectare estate, which—aided by climate change—is making the most of its terroir, situated on the three terraces of the Lot.

Review and comment by Mr. GILLES D. Published on May 16, 2025

A delicious and vibrant expression of Malbec, full of finesse and roundness, that also displays body and a perfectly ripe, balanced finish. Full-bodied, fleshy, and silky, with a celebration of stewed red and black fruits and sweet spices, while subtle notes of cocoa, tobacco, and forest floor lie in wait. A long, vigorous, and fresh finish with a hint of mint. One of Cahors’ best values in terms of quality and enjoyment. An irresistible wine already perfect for immediate enjoyment with a wild boar terrine with porcini mushrooms, followed by a parmentier with duck confit and lamb’s lettuce. Rating = 4.4.
