Côtes de Montravel
The Côtes de Montravel AOC originates from the exceptional terroir of the Montravel appellation.
The hills that make up the bulk of the Montravel AOC’s terroir extend eastward from those of Saint-Emilion and the Côtes de Castillon. To the west, they mark the entrance to the Bergerac wine region. These foothills of the Périgord Pourpre also form a boundary between the oceanic and continental climates. It is here, at Montravel, that the tidal bore—a surging wave that travels up the Dordogne from the ocean with every tide—comes to an end.
The 27 hectares that make up the appellation are mainly planted on the molasse hillsides of the Agenais region, a heavily eroded Tertiary-era geological formation.
The wines of the Côtes de Montravel are white and made from Muscadelle, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Ondenc (up to 10%). These are sweet wines with a residual sugar content of between 8 and 54 grams per liter.
