Côtes de Montravel
The Côtes de Montravel Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée comes from the exceptional terroir of the Montravel appellation.
The hillsides that make up the bulk of the Montravel AOC’s terroir extend eastward from those of Saint-Emilion and the Côtes de Castillon. To the west, they mark the entrance to the Bergerac wine region. These foothills of the Périgord Pourpre also form the boundary between an oceanic climate and a continental climate. It is here, near Montravel, that the mascaret—a surging wave that travels up the Dordogne from the ocean with every tide—comes to an end.
The 27 hectares that make up the appellation are mainly planted on the slopes of the Agenais molasse, a heavily eroded Tertiary-era formation.
The wines of the Côtes de Montravel are white and made from Muscadelle, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Ondenc (up to 10%). These are sweet wines with a residual sugar content that must be between 8 and 54 grams per liter.
