Côtes de Montravel

Montravel coastline

The Côtes de Montravel Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) comes from the exceptional terroir of the Montravel appellation.

The hillsides that make up most of the Montravel AOC terroir extend eastward from those of Saint-Emilion and Côtes de Castillon. To the west, they mark the entrance to the Bergerac vineyards. These foothills of the Périgord Pourpre also mark the boundary between oceanic and continental climates. It is here, at Montravel, that the tidal bore, a breaking wave that travels up the Dordogne River with each tide, comes to an end.

The 27 hectares that make up the appellation are mainly planted on the molasses hillsides of the Agenais region, a heavily reworked tertiary structure.

Côtes de Montravel wines are white and made from Muscadelle, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Ondenc grapes, with a maximum of 10% Ondenc. These are sweet wines with a residual sugar content of between 8 and 54 grams per liter.
