“A handsome man from Marmande!”

"Leather and chestnuts on the nose, but rich, concentrated Damascus plum fruit on the palate. A hint of peach pit, both in texture and flavor. Lots of energy and just a touch of heat at the back of the throat. There is a scent of fresh mushrooms that hovers over the wine at first, but settles into the finish. It’s a wine that makes me crave a bowl of truffle risotto. Drink between 2019 and 2025.” (Jancis Robinson)

Wine rated (2020 guide) 17/20 (Reference wine)

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more conventional and uniform than the previous one)

About the wine:

Absolutely stunning. An intense red, very well-structured and complex, still quite young but with its potential evident in every sip. The tight structure supports a complex and well-balanced bouquet.

About the estate:

On their family estate in the Côtes du Marmandais, Véronique Broutet and her husband Frédéric founded Domaine de Beyssac in 2006. The winery was built in 2009, and the journey continues today with these 14 contiguous hectares, situated on a well-exposed hillside and cultivated using biodynamic methods since 2017. All grapes are harvested by hand, and spontaneous, natural ground cover is encouraged. The wines from this beautiful terroir are dense and smooth. They emerge serious and vigorous, then mellow and reveal their character after three years. The 2015 and 2016 vintages are particularly successful.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2019) 2* Favorite (Remarkable wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the wine:

The depth, intensity, and brilliance of the color leave no doubt as to the concentration of this wine, a blend of Merlot and Abouriou. The nose confirms this, revealing intense notes of very ripe fruit, pepper, vanilla, and licorice. A clean attack leads to a palate that mirrors the bouquet—rich, smooth, and dense, supported by firm tannins, and lingering into a beautiful, long licorice-tinged finish. A powerful and complex wine with excellent aging potential.

About the estate:

A successful career change for Frédéric Broutet, who built this winery from the ground up in 2009. With his 12.5 hectares of vineyards in Marmande, this “new winemaker” has achieved a remarkable track record in sustainable practices: an eco-friendly winery, organic farming from the very beginning, and biodynamic farming since 2016.

A wine with real character that’s very enjoyable on the day itself, with a firm, long finish. The next day, the wine seems lighter. A second bottle with a corked taste! Too bad.

A very special wine! The Abouriou grape variety certainly plays a part in that. The alcohol overpowers everything; it’s already been aged for seven years and won’t benefit from being kept any longer. A bit pricey for my taste.

Review by Mr. MATHIEU W. Posted on June 28, 2020

Tasted June 27, 2020 Deep, dark ruby color with a significant purple hue. A very vibrant color. On the nose, ripe plum, blackberry, and blackcurrant. Along with spices, forest floor, and earthy notes, as well as ink and medicinal roots. All very complex. On the palate, an explosion of rich blackberry, plum, and blackcurrant fruit. Supported by spiciness and lovely (subtle) oak notes. Enormous tannin structure with fine-grained tannins and a slight bitterness. Lots of body and power. Fine acidity that provides grip. A well-made wine that focuses primarily on the fruit, yet still shows its terroir. Still has good aging potential due to the fine tannins. Currently, in its youth, it pairs well with hearty meat dishes. The wine will show more depth in about 3 to 4 years (2023/24) and can easily be cellared until 2028. Score: 16+/20

Smooth and silky, still a bit closed on the nose but very pleasant on the palate.
