“Savour all the richness of Marcillac—it’s irresistible!”

“True to form, the estate has produced a top-tier Fer-Servadou, with a beautifully intense color and an open, complex nose of licorice, tobacco, black fruit, and bell pepper, followed by notes of undergrowth and humus. A nuanced expression that carries through to a full-bodied, rich, and opulent palate, supported by a subtle tension and firm tannins that still need to mellow. Cellar it.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2026).

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more conventional and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Philippe Teulier has successfully expanded the family estate. When he started out in 1984, he began with just one hectare. Over time and with great patience, he gradually managed to buy plots from his neighbors—some cultivated, some fallow—and restored them to health, eventually expanding to 60 hectares of land today, including 33 hectares of vineyards that are mostly terraced, offering a splendid view of the surrounding area. The red color of the soil creates a striking contrast with the green of the vegetation, ranging from limestone to red sandstone. As for the winery, initially built to vinify 2 hectares, it has followed the vine’s example and is now organized into a cascade of levels descending the hill, while blending perfectly into the natural landscape. Inside, everything can naturally be done by gravity. Taking a hands-off approach, Philippe and his son Julien prefer to encourage rather than intervene—a philosophy that has proven successful. The lovely range is an ode to Fer Servadou, the local grape variety, also known as Mansois in Aveyron or Braucol in Gaillac.

About the wine:

True to form, the estate has produced a top-tier Fer-Servadou, with a deep, intense color and an open, complex nose of licorice, tobacco, black fruit, and bell pepper, followed by notes of undergrowth and humus. A nuanced expression that carries through to a full-bodied, rich, and opulent palate, supported by a subtle tension and firm tannins that still need to mellow. Best cellared.

About the estate:

When it was founded in 1984, this iconic estate in the Marcillac AOC had just one hectare of vineyards and produced about 4,000 bottles a year; it now covers 33 hectares. The estate is run by Philippe Teulier, who has been assisted by his son Julien since 2006. A sure bet.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Philippe Teulier is something of a “patriarch” in Marcillac. As the driving force behind the appellation, he inspires the Aveyron producers who take pride in this distinctive grape, the Mansois (or Fer Servadou). Julien, his son, runs the estate alongside him. The fluidity of their blends stems from a perfect mastery of the unique qualities of their vineyard, terraced in the Marcillac valley—a terroir akin to the mountains due to its hot days and cool autumn nights. Their three main vintages do justice to all the wines of the Southwest.
