Wine rated (2027 guide) 90/100

Rated estate (2027 guide): 2* stars (A solid and recommendable production, though a bit more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Sylvie and Jean-François Deffarge have proudly carried on the Montravel legacy at this family-owned estate since 1749, which spans 38 hectares on the hillsides and the Vélines plateau. They have recently handed the reins to their sons, Quentin and Benjamin, while remaining on hand to support them. The extensive lineup offers wines suitable for every occasion. The estate obtained organic certification in 2022.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated Estate: Award-Winning Wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

A very old family estate (1749) located on the hills above Montravel, this vast property is now one of the leading names in the Bergerac region, thanks to the work carried out since 1990 (when the estate left the cooperative) by Jean-François Deffarge, a “self-taught oenologist,” who is now passing the torch to his sons Benjamin and Quentin. The vineyard (50 ha) spans two distinct terroirs: clay-limestone slopes and a high plateau of boulbène soil. Currently in the process of converting to organic farming.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 91/100

About the wine:

Made from grapes grown in vineyards located on the hillside that stretches eastward from Saint-Émilion and Castillon, this wine has a rich structure. Unlike its western counterparts, the blend includes 30% Malbec. With its aromas of black pepper and spicy notes of black fruit, this wine should continue to improve with age.
