The Franschhoek area—meaning "the French corner" in Afrikaans—is a subregion of the Paarl region. Franschhoek is located at the southeastern tip of the district. The Franschhoek vineyards are planted on alluvial riverbanks or hillsides. Historically a region planted with Sémillon, red wine production is growing steadily.
