“This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc has left an indelible impression on the palate: a marvel of power and balance”

"[...] Harmonious aromas of black fruit accented by graphite and garrigue. Crafted with old-world precision, it reveals a well-rounded power on the palate; the black fruit is enhanced by spices, with notes of dark chocolate, dried herbs, and cedar oak on a long finish. Great aging potential. 2025–2037” (Decanter 2025)

Wine rated (2025 guide) 94/100

About the wine:

A blend of grapes from two Franschhoek growers and the organic vineyards of Boekenhoutskloof, which also produce the 10% Cabernet Franc included in the blend. Gentle vinification and extended malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels, followed by 22 months of aging in barrels (95% new). Harmonious aromas of black fruit accented by graphite and garrigue. Crafted with old-school precision, it reveals a wrapped-up power on the palate; black fruit is enhanced by spices, with notes of dark chocolate, dried herbs, and cedar oak on a long finish. Great aging potential. 2025–2037

Wine rated (2025 guide) 94/100 (Excellent wine)

About the wine:

The Boekenhoutskloof 2022 Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with a small percentage (10%) of Cabernet Franc and aged almost exclusively (90%) in new oak barrels. The grapes come from a vineyard located in a narrow ravine, where nights are quite cool and days are very hot. The region requires a longer ripening period due to the shade cast by the neighboring mountains of Stellenbosch. At the same time, the False Bay side of the vineyard is influenced by oceanic weather conditions, with extreme temperature drops or diurnal variations. The soils are very old and composed of weathered quartz. This wine is smooth, round, and very pleasant, with plenty of body and flavor on the mid-palate. There are hints of dried spices and sweet cinnamon. These two Cabernet Sauvignons promise long cellaring potential. In fact, the winery has a late-release program, and I believe they are currently serving the 2001 vintage. 2025–2038

About the wine:

The oak influence is evident but does not overpower the wine. Cedar and sandalwood, ripe blackcurrant and black cherry, oregano and wild thyme, along with the smoky note of jalapeño that I typically associate with South African Cabernet. Rugged tannins. The wine is elegant and balanced, but also very tight at the moment. It is not ready yet, but will be delicious in 2 to 3 years, and for several years thereafter. 2027–2034
