About the estate:
Alongside his wine-trading venture in South Africa, Julien Schaal founded his Alsatian business in 2011—a highly original endeavor, as it is exclusively a wine-trading operation based on the purchase of grapes from Grand Cru vineyards. Currently, nine grand cru wines are on the list, representing just about every type of soil in the region, and the selection consists solely of Riesling, with the exception of a Gewürztraminer from Osterberg and a blend from Altenberg de Bergheim. In a blind tasting, his 2017 vintages blew us away. Hats off!

About the wine:
Made primarily from grapes grown in the Osterberg region, the 2023 Alsace Pinot Gris was partially fermented on the skins (15%) in Perle tanks as well as in Burgundy barrels, including malolactic fermentation. Aged on fine lees for five to six months, the wine displays ripe, elegant fruit with salty and mineral notes. On the palate, it is a full-bodied, round, and intense Pinot Gris, remarkably textured, with salty notes of finely crushed stone intertwined with delicate tannins. It is a warm and generous Pinot Gris, yet precise and stimulating, with a long and intense finish. 13% alcohol by volume. Grainy cork. Tasted in April 2024.
