About the estate:
Alongside a wine-trading venture in South Africa, Julien Schaal founded his Alsatian business in 2011—a highly original endeavor, as it is exclusively a wine-trading operation based on the purchase of grapes from Grand Cru vineyards. Currently, nine grand cru wines are on the menu, representing just about every type of soil in the region, and the selection consists solely of Riesling—with the exception of a Gewürztraminer from the Osterberg and a blend from the Altenberg de Bergheim. In a blind tasting, his 2017 vintages blew us away. Hats off!

Wine rated (2026 guide) 90/100
About the wine:
The 2024 Riesling is made from grapes harvested in Riquewihr, Hunawihr, and Ribeauvillé, on soils that are both limestone and gneiss. A smooth, creamy texture is accented by a hint of lemon and a note of lemon balm. On the palate, it is lemony, lively, supple, concentrated, and elegant, with superb roundness resulting from partial malolactic fermentation. A lingering freshness further highlights the lemon notes. A perfect Riesling with vibrant fruit and remarkable mineral freshness, well-rounded and enhanced by a subtle salinity on the finish. Pairs wonderfully with tagliatelle with smoked salmon and crème fraîche. Bursting with energy and incredibly effective, all at an unbeatable price. Rating = 4.3.
