About the estate:

While Jean-Michel Deiss spends a great deal of time in his vineyards, it is his son Mathieu who oversees the winemaking process. An engaging winemaker, his sensibility is evident in the evolution of the wines—particularly the Pinot Noirs, which become more delicate and refined with each vintage. For the whites, experiments with maceration lend body and depth to the textures on the palate. As both a winemaker and an entrepreneur, Mathieu has expanded the vineyard from 27 to 45 hectares, including his “Vignoble du Rêveur” project, which he runs with his partner, Emmanuelle Milan. Since 2020, two hectares have been dedicated to the production of grapevines, and the estate has acquired its own planting machine, strengthening its autonomy and mastery of all aspects of winemaking.

About the wine:

Pinot Noir blended with Pinot Beurot, Meunier, Blanc, and Gris. Magnificent aromas of cherries and summer berries lead into a brilliant attack. Nuanced depth and hints of fresh leaves in a juicy, smooth palate with subtle tannic power. It is said that the silicified limestone soils resemble those of the Côte de Nuits. Balanced and exciting. Try it with beef Wellington or pigeon.

The 2020 Burlenberg “La Colline Brûlée” offers a deep, rich, and very intense—yet refined and complex—bouquet of perfectly ripe and elegant black and red fruits. On the palate, full-bodied, intense, and textured, this is a generous, very intense, and warm Pinot Noir with intense fruit and structure, silky tannins, and a remarkably complex, briny texture—a salinity that stimulates the salivary glands. Still young but with great promise, it is one of the finest and most complex Alsace Reds. Declared alcohol content: 13.5%. Natural cork. Tasted at the estate in April 2024.

About the estate:

Mathieu Deiss has succeeded his father, Jean-Michel, as head of this venerable estate in Bergheim. Mixed planting remains the guiding principle, even for the grands crus. Although this method is a time-honored tradition in the region, it is still rarely practiced and remains a source of significant division among winemakers. The Deiss family continues to push the boundaries of this approach, producing compelling, complex wines with marvelous intensity of flavor and incredible balance. Mathieu has also created the Vignoble du Rêveur from his mother’s vineyards in Bennwihr (where he produces, among other things, top-tier orange wines). The wines are exceptional for the region, which can be a bit disorienting for the consumer, but the result is magnificent. With a few years of hindsight, one can analyze the precision of the terroir definitions and these wines’ ability to maintain their own balance. Don’t miss the estate’s unique geo-sensory tasting experience, which helps you understand the relationship between a wine’s characteristics and the terroir from which it was born.

About the wine:

The 2020 Burlenberg is a Pinot Noir with approximately 5% Pinot Blanc. Grown on limestone along a fault line with granite, interspersed with volcanic ash, weathering has created a mixed soil composed of brown, alkaline earth. The result is acidic wines, enhanced by the 350-meter elevation—the estate’s highest plot. Floral notes emerge from the very first whiff, followed by a creamy softness and a hint of iron oxide and smoke. The palate is smooth, unfolding like black silk, yet juicy. This wine used to be so rustic, so exuberant—almost boisterous, with plenty of youthful energy; although there are grippy tannins, they have been tamed to become elegant, with superb energy still very much present. It is firm, structured, long-lasting, and muscular, yet so invigorating and refined. (Bone-dry)

About the wine:

This vineyard, located at an elevation of 280 meters, faces southeast and was planted by Marcel Deiss, Jean-Michel’s grandfather. The bouquet boasts superb intensity, marked by notes of flint and the energy of volcanic soils whose siliceous limestones were scorched by lava. The wine has body, fullness, and power. The tannins provide this power without being overpowering; they complement the wine, while the bitterness ensures freshness and a touch of austerity on the finish. A wine to age. 2025–2035
