Mount Pleasant
In 1921, Maurice O'Shea, a graduate in viticulture and oenology from the University of Montpellier, convinced his mother to purchase a 16.3-hectare estate in the Hunter Valley, which he named Mount Pleasant. About a decade later, the McWilliams family—already known for producing fortified wines—invested in the property and then purchased it outright in 1941. Maurice O’Shea remained the winemaker until his death in 1959.
Since Maurice O’Shea’s passing, three successive winemakers have worked to build and sustain Mount Pleasant’s reputation.
Mount Pleasant comprises five distinct vineyards: Lovedale (31.1 ha), Rosehill (27 ha), Estate (29.5 ha), Old Paddock (0.74 ha), and Old Hill (3.1 ha). The majority of production is dedicated to Syrah (Shiraz) and Sémillon, both of which are internationally renowned.
