"A clean and fresh Chardonnay (James Suckling)"

"Winemaker Gilles Gelin loves to produce precision wines, and this is one of them. On the nose, a fragrant blend of lemon and lime zest opens up to notes of orange blossom, white peach, and golden apple. Delicate acidity leads to a round palate of orchard fruits with hints of salinity and wet stone on the finish. This is a versatile wine that pairs perfectly with Caesar salad, anchovy fillets, and patatas bravas." (Wine Enthusiast 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Gilles Gelin is part of a young generation of Beaujolais winemakers who produce a large volume of wines of impeccable quality. In the 2016 vintage, we noticed a shift in the style of the wines, which became more delicate, with a more refined aromatic precision. This style was confirmed in 2017. The wines are medium-bodied, with just the right balance. They are reliable and enjoyable. What more could you ask for?

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2025) 1*Star (Very successful wine)

About wine:

The estate's Chardonnays are planted on nearly 3 hectares of clay-limestone soil. Gilles Gelin has produced a lively, fresh cuvée, in which a certain fullness is combined with a touch of acidity, underpinned by a mineral structure. Floral and citrus notes complete the picture.

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

3-star estate (very high-quality production)

About the estate:

The son and grandson of winegrowers, Gérard Gelin acquired Clos des Nugues in 1976, before joining forces with his son Gilles. Located in the north of Beaujolais, on the edge of the Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, and Morgon appellations, the estate now covers almost 30 hectares. The average age of the vines is around 45 years, with some Gamay vines even over a century old.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 89/100 (Very good wine)

Rated Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About wine:

In Lancié, there is a selection of limestone soils that are well suited to Chardonnay. Aged for six months on lees in vats, the Beaujolais-Lancié Blanc 2022 presents aromas of white peach, nectarine, and gardenia, with hints of reductive flint aromas. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, with a core of juicy citrus and stone fruit, the initially voluminous wine is sharpened by its chalky texture, which gives it concentration and length.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)

About the estate:

At the crossroads of wine regions, the Gelin family mainly produces Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages wines. A few plots in Morgon (1 hectare) and Fleurie (6 hectares) complete a range that extends from VDF to homemade crème de cassis. The wines resemble their creator, Gilles Gelin: rich in color with fruity tannins, they reveal themselves over time. His white wine is a metronomic Chardonnay in Beaujolais-Villages, which he continues to plant on suitable land. His Gamay version shows the excellence of the Lancié terroir when worked with adjusted yields.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 89/100

About wine:

The Beaujolais-Lancié Blanc 2022 comes from several plots of generally younger vines. It has a lovely, well-defined bouquet with hints of white peach and citrus peel. The palate is well-balanced with fine acidity, and the terroir expresses itself much more than its peers, offering greater complexity and tension on the finish. This wine is well worth seeking out.
