About the estate:
The Mélinand family is based in Fleurie, but their 20-hectare estate spans six appellations, including the Fleurie (the largest), Chiroubles, and Juliénas crus, and—since the arrival of their son, Mathieu—a vineyard in Morgon. We were won over by the 2015 vintage; the 2016, while offering a different style, further refined the estate’s character. The 2017 vintage confirms the delicate, slender profile—without any dilution—that we so admire. Our only regret is that some cuvées have a nose that’s a touch too ethereal. Overall, this is a highly recommended estate with a refined style.

About the estate:
Founded in 1970 in Fleurie by Jean-Jacques and Liliane Mélinand using the family’s vineyards, the estate was taken over by their son Mathieu in 2009. Mathieu, who previously worked as a winemaker in Australia and New Zealand, now manages 20 hectares of vineyards spread across six appellations, including four crus. A sure bet.

Aged for 11 months in large oak barrels, the 2023 Fleurie Les Marrans reveals an expressive bouquet of rose petals, sweet spices, candied bark, cherries, and blackberries. Medium- to full-bodied, it offers ripe, succulent flavors without any sense of heaviness, maintaining an elegance supported by supple, velvety tannins. A charming wine, ready to drink now.

About the estate:
Mathieu Mélinand took over the family’s 20-hectare estate in 2008, after gaining experience in the Southern Hemisphere. Each of the four crus is mature, maintained through the annual replanting of missing vines. All the wines are vinified with native yeasts and aged in large oak casks. They have lush textures, but are not over-extracted.

Favorite the Fleury wines from this brilliant vintage, it displays great power in terms of flavor density and complexity, while retaining a delightful freshness. Beautiful crushed red berries and tart black berries in general—and crisp Burlat cherries in particular—are intensely present in a pulpy, delicate, and velvety texture. The palate, round and elegant, stretches toward a formidable, savory finish, enhanced by a subtle spicy kick. The concept of pure indulgence takes on its full meaning with this beautiful Gamay, even more so when paired with hearty, rustic dishes to share in a convivial atmosphere. Rating: 4.2.
