"A real Favorite "

“A medium-deep ruby color. A lively nose of raspberry and violet. On the palate, the fruit is very ripe, but it is balanced by a lively, fresh acidity. The tannins are well-integrated, soft, and smooth. This wine has great aging potential. A touch of warmth on the finish.” (Jancis Robinson 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2022 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

The Mélinand family is based in Fleurie, but their 20-hectare estate spans six appellations, including the Fleurie crus (the largest), Chiroubles, and Juliénas, and—since the arrival of their son, Mathieu—a vineyard in Morgon. We were won over by the 2015 vintage; the 2016 vintage, while offering a different style, refined the estate’s signature profile. The 2017 vintage confirms the delicate, slender profile—without any dilution—that we so admire. Our only regret is that some cuvées exhibit a slightly ethereal nose. Overall, this is a highly recommended estate with a refined style.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2023 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

Founded in 1970 in Fleurie by Jean-Jacques and Liliane Mélinand using the family’s vineyards, the estate was taken over by their son Mathieu in 2009. Having previously worked as a winemaker in Australia and New Zealand, he now manages 20 hectares of vineyards spread across six appellations, including four crus. A sure bet.

Rated wine (2025 guide) 90/100 (Excellent wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

Made from a blend of young vines and 60-year-old vines, the 2023 Chiroubles Aux Côtes is juicy, with a round, full-bodied development and a generous mid-palate featuring notes of slightly overripe raspberries, cherries, lilac petals, and sweet spices, enhanced by lively acidity. Tannins as fine as sandpaper emerge more distinctly on the finish, tightening the wine and giving it a lingering texture.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 90/100

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

Chiroubles beautifully expresses the terroir, with distinct floral notes.

About the estate:

Mathieu Mélinand took over the family’s 20-hectare estate in 2008, following his experiences in the Southern Hemisphere. Each of the four crus is mature, maintained through the annual replanting of missing vines. All the wines are vinified with native yeasts and aged in large oak casks. They possess rich textures, but are not overly extracted.

Still youthful, yet already magnificent and sensual, releasing a rich, luscious juice dominated by an abundance of jammy red fruits, enveloped in sweet spices, all underpinned by an invigorating freshness and supported by supple tannins that lend softness and velvety texture. A remarkable balance that delivers delightful sensations when paired with a platter of Lyon-style charcuterie or endives au gratin with ham. Rating = 4.3.

It’s quite effervescent; I hope that as it ages, the remnants of malolactic fermentation will fade away.
