"Eric Duffau’s fifth Coup de Coeur for this Merlot-dominated cuvée, which opens with notes of black fruit and spices. The round, luscious palate develops fine-grained, ripe, and velvety tannins, with vanilla and chocolate flavors. A remarkable balance between the wine and the oak..." (Guide Hachette 2012). Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

Whether it’s Bordeaux or Bordeaux Supérieur, red, white, or rosé, Éric Duffau masterfully crafts wines from the region’s AOCs. In 1979, he took over the family estate located in Entre-deux-Mers, on the left bank of the Dordogne. His 46-hectare vineyard is situated primarily on hillsides facing Saint-Émilion.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Éric Duffau demonstrates that Bordeaux grape varieties harvested at peak ripeness, carefully vinified, and aged with restraint produce impeccable wines at an excellent price point across all three red, white, and rosé categories. The clay-based terroirs on limestone subsoils, located primarily in Génissac and Moulon, impart all their flavors to the wines, but slightly excessive oak can mask the fruit’s natural character.

It remains a sure bet on the site. I drank the last bottle in late August 2016, and the wine hasn't started to go off yet!

Tasted in June 2014. The color is somewhat pale but full-bodied; the nose is rich with overripe red fruit and a hint of alcohol; the palate is taut but well-balanced, with a touch of sweetness that allows the oak to blend in seamlessly.

Since I already enjoyed the 2005 vintage, I decided to try the 2009, and it’s a real treat—especially at that price! Well done, and… here’s to the next great vintage.

Good value for a Bordeaux that offers plenty of power and good balance, even if the oak is quite noticeable

Tasted in December 2012: a good wine, concentrated yet with good acidity. The tannins are already quite supple, suggesting that the wine is ready to drink now, but in my opinion, it’s worth waiting a few more months.

Excellent value for the money. The 2009 may not be quite as polished as the 2005. But let’s let it rest in the cellar for a while! We’ll revisit this in two or three years...
