"Charming in every way"

“Red and black berries burst forth in this beautiful, fully aromatic 2017. The fruit and oak blend perfectly to highlight a full-bodied, dense texture with well-integrated tannins. Whether to serve it now or lay it down is a matter of personal preference.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2020)

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 1 star (A high-quality, recommended wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Located in La Sauve-Majeure, in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers region, this estate has long been a classic producer of fine, affordable Bordeaux wines in all three styles. The Courselle family, who oversee the château and its winemaking with talent and expertise, have created the quintessential wine destination. Sylvie and Marie Courselle, Francis’s daughters, have inherited the family passion. Both engineers and oenologists, they have now taken the reins of Thieuley. The red, white, and clairet wines are always well-structured, flavorful, rich, and balanced. Don’t miss the Francis-Courselle cuvée, which is particularly elegant.

About the estate:

The Courselle family’s history in winemaking began in 1949 when André Courselle purchased Château Thieuley, not far from La Sauve-Majeure. Under the leadership of Francis and, since 2004, his daughters Sylvie and Marie, the vineyard now spans 80 hectares and includes three estates: Thieuley, a benchmark in Bordeaux; Château Saint-Genès, intended for export; and Clos Sainte-Anne, 5 hectares of gravelly soil in Capian.

It’s best to wait 3–4 years. Otherwise, decant it for at least 2–3 hours before serving (to reduce astringency). 12/20.

Although not particularly expressive, this wine stands out for its well-balanced character. Good value for money.
