Terroirs

The vineyard is located on a south-facing hillock resting on a base of asterian limestone, with a 10- to 40-centimeter layer of decarbonated clay on the surface.

Viticulture

Grape Harvest

Stored in crates with drainage holes to prevent moisture from pooling at the bottom.

Winemaking

Grapes are placed in vats by gravity, followed by whole-cluster fermentation, with punching down alternated with small, frequent pump-overs and manual sprinkling of the pomace. A vertical cage press is used, with selection of the press wines. The wine is aged in separate lots until final blending. Malolactic fermentation takes place partially in barrels. The wine is aged on lees for one month and stirred on the lees for one month.

A complex bouquet with notes of black cherries and ripe red berries. Smoky hints blend with mineral notes.

Palate

The attack is supple and fresh, with the full range of fruit flavors—such as candied cherry and blackcurrant—coming to the fore once again. Toasty flavors blend with hints of flint. After a few years of aging, it will develop truffle aromas, one of the hallmarks of its terroir. It offers exceptional aromatic concentration, balanced by a mineral salinity: a unique elegance and distinction.

About the estate:

Ideally situated on the Tertre du Canon plateau, Vrai Canon Bouché owes its revival to Philip de Haseth-Möller, who acquired it in 2005 on the sound advice of Stéphane Derenoncourt, before selling it in 2014 to an investment firm, La Française REM. Jean de Laître manages the estate with masterful skill and is the heart and soul of the property. His efforts in the vineyard—and above all his great patience in understanding such a complex terroir—are paying off in full, and the wines continue to improve. The 40% Cabernet Franc allows for the production of an elegant, well-structured wine, with a top-tier 2015 vintage, thanks to the freshness provided by the exposed limestone. For around twenty euros, this is one of the best wines on the Right Bank!

About the estate:

This renowned Fronsadais estate covers 13 hectares on the Canon hill, a beautiful terroir of limestone rich in asterias and covered with clay; it was acquired in 2005 by Dutch businessman Philip de Haseth-Möller, who entrusted its management to Jean de Laitre, supported by Stéphane Derenoncourt. This team remained in place after the estate was acquired in 2014 by La Française REM, an asset management firm already heavily invested in French vineyards.
