"Château Mangot's 'little brother' stands out for its explosive fruitiness!"

“This wine displays a certain frankness, opening with explosive, straightforward, and crisp fruit. The palate is very savory, with a lovely texture of tannins marked by a charming rusticity. It’s a wine that stands on its own two feet, reflecting its origins—juicy, full-bodied, and refreshing, with beautiful bitter notes on the finish. ” (Terre de Vins 2022) – Produced by the Todeschini brothers, this is a winery to watch in the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux AOC!

Rated estate (2024 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

This intense red, with lovely fruity notes, offers good body, presence, and complexity. It is a lovely, fruit-forward wine—very fresh, well-crafted, and with good length—that is a pleasure to enjoy with meat in sauce or roast meat. 2023–2028

About the estate:

The vineyards, founded in 1951 by Jean Petit, comprise 37 ha in a single block of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, on a terroir rich in asterias limestone (Mangot, an ancient cru first mentioned in 1510), and 16 hectares in Castillon (La Brande), managed since 1989 by Jean-Guy and Anne-Marie Todeschini, who were joined in 2008 by their sons Karl and Yann. The vineyard has been certified organic since the 2020 vintage and is currently in the process of converting to biodynamic farming.

About the wine:

Among the best Right Bank wines under 25 euros: Reservedat first, this 2019 really comes into its own after a few minutes in the glass. A beautiful wine—full-bodied, lively, and carried by a refined, mouth-watering tannic finish. Perfect for serving at a winter dinner party.

About the estate:

This is the historic estate of the Todeschini family, who also own Château Mangot, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé located a few kilometers away. The brotherly duo of Karl and Yann is helping to drive the current momentum for the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation—this enchanting vineyard of intertwined hills and plateaus, characterized by varied exposures and dotted with bodies of water and groves. The 16 hectares cultivated using biodynamic methods produce concentrated wines, structured by firm tannins but above all by the mouth-watering quality so characteristic of the region’s clay-limestone soils. Bravo, Castillon! Bravo, the Todeschinis!

Review and comment by Mr. GILLES D. Published on September 6, 2024

This elegant, refined Castillon Favorite the excellent 2019 vintage, which is as expressive as it is energetic. It captivates with its wonderfully smooth palate, which reveals remarkable complexity and great body. The abundant juiciness, with its lovely acidity and intense, radiant fruit (cherry, black plum, blueberry, raspberry), is combined with delicate spices and notes of coffee. With a fine, powdery texture, the soft tannins glide into a savory, lingering finish, whose depth of flavor is accentuated by subtle earthy and cocoa notes. This well-crafted Castillon promises plenty of enjoyment. Accessible and harmonious, La Brande is perfect for a sumptuous meal featuring Limousine chateaubriands with green pepper sauce and a gratin dauphinois. Rating = 4.2.
