Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
Located about thirty kilometers from Bordeaux, bordering Saint-Emilion and the Dordogne department, the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation offers a wide range of red wines, each with its own distinct qualities and flavors. The 3,000 hectares of the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation yield an annual wine production of 160,000 hectoliters.
The terroir of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux wines features top-quality vineyard soils: on the hillsides and the plateau, there are clay-limestone soils and molasses (detrital sandstone cemented by limestone). The wines produced here are concentrated and powerful. At the base of the hillsides and on the alluvial terrace, closer to the river, the soils have a higher silt and sand content, with the presence of gravel. The wines produced here are more supple, charming, and warm. This geological richness and ideal climatic conditions are the source of the diversity and excellence of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux wines.
Merlot, Cabernet Franc (or Bouchet), and Cabernet Sauvignon are the three main grape varieties used to make Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux red wines. With deep, rich colors, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux wines are intensely aromatic, featuring pronounced notes of red fruits (strawberry, raspberry, etc.) and stone fruits (plum, cherry, etc.). Depending on the vintage, their flavor profile diversifies to include aromas of prune or leather. These are generous, concentrated wines of great finesse, very enjoyable in their youth, yet capable of demonstrating excellent aging potential.
