Hachette Guide: Favorite Pick 2**, European Grand Jury 90,51, Bettane & Desseauve 16,5/20
With no fewer than 6 Hachette Favorites in 10 years, Haut-Carles is the prestige wine of the Carles Castle. Launched in 1994, it can confidently rival the most prestigious wines from its immediate neighbors in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. It is produced from a selection of 8 hectares of vineyards, where the specially selected vines are tended with the utmost care. Meticulous winemaking and 18 months of aging in barrels give it its remarkable quality. A superb achievement combining finesse and power...

Rated estate (2014 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or high-quality winemakers producing wines of a good standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

“Banker Stéphane Droulers created the Haut-Carles cuvée in 1994 to showcase the very best that the finest terroirs of Château de Carles—a property inherited from his wife, Constance Chastenet de Castaing—had to offer. Carefully vinified and luxuriously oaked, this cuvée initially embodied the archetype of modern Bordeaux without becoming a caricature. Composed of 90% Merlot, it reveals over time a very personal expression of a distinguished terroir that ages harmoniously.”
