About the estate:

Since 2003, Bruno Borie, with the invaluable assistance of Éric Boissenot as his winemaking consultant, has helped this renowned cru regain its former glory, coming very close to—and at times surpassing—certain premiers crus. The second wine, La Croix-de-Beaucaillou, which includes the remarkable vineyards of the former Terrey Gros Cailloux, has finally joined the best in its category since 2005. A third Saint-Julien, Lalande-Borie, a long-standing and highly regarded brand in the wine trade, refers to a supple, elegant, and early-maturing wine, produced from vines that belonged to Château Lagrange in 1855.

Lovers of classic Médoc wines will find what they’re looking for in Ducru-Beaucaillou. Bruno Borie steers this superb estate with talent and determination; in recent years, he has positioned it among the top tier of Bordeaux wines. Never ostentatious, nor over-extracted nor overly powerful, the wines shine for their distinction and the silkiness of their texture. These are profound, approachable, and well-balanced Médocs. Be warned, however: since a Ducru-Beaucaillou only fully reveals itself with age, it is always a shame to taste it too early; its great freshness on the finish and the elegant texture of its tannins are a testament to the exceptional character of its terroir. Croix de Beaucaillou, the château’s former second wine, is now a cru in its own right, with its own dedicated vineyard plots.

Truly floral and lovely, with notes of red currants, cherries, and a hint of violets. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture. Attractive tannins; the blend includes a high percentage of Merlot alongside Cabernet, giving it a fresh and firm character. A sophisticated wine.

The nose is elegant, offering a touch of intensity and harmony. It reveals notes of blackcurrant, wild strawberry, and, more subtly, wild red berries, combined with hints of spice, nutmeg, subtle hints of pepper, and an imperceptible hint of fresh tobacco. On the palate, it is fruity, fresh, and mineral, with a refined character, offering fine-grained texture, harmony, smoothness, and good definition, along with a lively acidity, subtle tension, and a refined structure. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of pulpy, juicy blackberries, pulpy, juicy red berries, and, to a lesser extent, pulpy blackcurrants, combined with subtle hints of violet, nutmeg, fresh blond tobacco, and discreet hints of spice and chocolate. Good length. Very subtle hints of crushed almond and hazelnut, along with caramelization, on the finish. A very delicate texture on the finish. Good persistence.

Flowers, raspberries, and a hint of spice round out the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, straightforward, round, and fruity, with a fresh, smooth finish full of crème de cassis. Give it just a year or two in the cellar, and it should improve even further.
