“Wonderful: could this be the best Château La Lagune in years? ~ Vinous”

“With aromas of cherry, wild berries, and blackcurrant, intertwined with notes of dark chocolate, pencil shavings, and violet, the 2019 Château La Lagune is medium- to full-bodied, rich, and sensual, its fruity core framed by polished tannins and succulent acidity. With its elegant and generous style, it evokes a modern version of the brilliant 1990.” (Wine Advocate 2022) - Delivery in a wooden case is available for orders of 6 bottles of this wine (depending on country and selected shipping method)

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2022 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

La Lagune has not been rewarded by the weather in recent vintages for its commitment to organic viticulture. Under the guidance of its director, Caroline Frey, the wine has made significant progress in recent years, featuring blends with a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and more elegant tannin extraction. It just keeps getting better and better.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated wine (2023 guide) 2* Stars (Outstanding wine)

Rated estate (2021 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the wine:

With a beautiful, deep ruby color, this wine fully expresses itself on the nose with aromas of black fruit and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied, smooth, dense, and powerful, firmly anchored by firm yet very fine-grained tannins that leave no doubt as to this wine’s serious potential. 2026–2032

About the estate:

The first classified growth encountered by visitors arriving from Bordeaux via the Médoc Wine Route, this château was purchased in 2000 by Jean-Jacques Frey, a businessman who already owned prestigious estates in Champagne and the Rhône Valley. With a long-standing reputation, La Lagune combines an elegant 18th-century charterhouse, superb cellars, a vast vineyard (110 hectares, 75 of which are dedicated to the grand vin), and a prime terroir—fine sandy gravel. These assets are brought to life by a dynamic team led by Caroline Frey, the owner’s daughter and the estate’s winemaker since 2004. The estate has been certified organic since the 2016 vintage.

Rated estate (2022 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

Located at the entrance to the Médoc, this estate has established its own distinctive style, consistently expressing great finesse and elegance. Under the leadership of Caroline Frey since 2004, the estate has produced a series of high-quality vintages that have secured its place among the top producers in its appellation. It must be said that the château has everything it needs to succeed: a very interesting, consistent terroir and state-of-the-art winemaking facilities. This is a sure bet that has nevertheless been painfully affected by the climatic vagaries of recent vintages.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

Château La Lagune 2019 offers exquisite clarity on the nose—one of the most expressive wines from this terroir in this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained, taut, and fresh tannins, quite briny, with a very integrated and balanced finish that lingers on the palate. Wonderful: could this be the best Château La Lagune in years? Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 2026–2050

James Suckling

Wine rated (2022 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

The nose offers rich notes of chocolate, tobacco, and blackcurrant. It is full-bodied, with chewy, polished, and pronounced tannins. Long and intense. This wine is rather tight and austere on the palate. It needs time to soften. Very structured. Made from organically grown grapes. Best after 2025.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Recommended

About the wine:

A rich bouquet of blackberries, autumn plums, and fresh coffee. Very clean and smooth on the palate, it reveals a lovely hint of bitterness, resulting in a wine that strikes a perfect balance between fruit and acidity. Light at first, it gains depth of texture thanks to the chalky character of its tannins.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 94/100

About the wine:

The bouquet of Château La Lagune stands out for its complexity and subtlety. It reveals various nuances with precision, through aromas of black berries, pepper, and licorice. On the palate, the attack surprises with its density. The wine is not opulent but has body and power, along with a juicy and lively structure, while the tannins reveal themselves gradually. They surprise with their imposing yet not overpowering nature on the finish. I believe Château La Lagune 2019 possesses all the necessary elements to age well in the cellar, though it can also be enjoyed in its youth. A persistent, fruity finish. A truly fine wine. 2025–2044

Wine rated (2022 guide) 94/100

About the wine:

The bouquet features notes of roses and lilacs, as well as ripe, sweet cherries. Medium-bodied, smooth, silky, fresh, and focused on its purity and refined character, the wine is effortlessly drinkable, finishing with layers of polished red fruit, hints of cocoa, and a touch of savory spices and herbs. This wine will rival the finest vintages Château La Lagune has ever produced and should age for decades. Best enjoyed between 2024 and 2042.
