Under the guidance of its director, Caroline Frey, the wine has made significant progress in recent years, with blends featuring a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and more elegant tannin extraction. It just keeps getting better and better.

With a beautiful, deep ruby color, this wine fully expresses itself on the nose with aromas of dark fruit and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied, smooth, dense, and powerful, firmly anchored by firm yet very fine-grained tannins that leave no doubt as to this wine’s serious potential. 2026–2032

About the estate:

The first classified growth visitors encounter when arriving from Bordeaux via the Médoc Wine Route, this château was purchased in 2000 by Jean-Jacques Frey, a businessman who already owned prestigious estates in Champagne and the Rhône Valley. With a long-standing reputation, La Lagune combines an elegant 18th-century charterhouse, superb cellars, a vast vineyard (110 ha, 75 of which are dedicated to the grand vin), and a prime terroir—fine, sandy gravel. These assets are brought to life by a dynamic team led by Caroline Frey, the owner’s daughter and the estate’s winemaker since 2004. The estate has been certified organic since the 2016 vintage.

Under the leadership of Caroline Frey since 2004, the estate has produced a series of very high-quality vintages that have earned it a place among the top producers in its appellation. It must be said that the château has everything it needs to succeed: a very interesting, consistent terroir and state-of-the-art winemaking facilities. This is a sure bet that has nonetheless been severely impacted by the unpredictable weather of recent vintages.

On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fine-grained, taut, and fresh tannins, quite briny, with a very integrated and balanced finish that lingers on the palate. The nose offers abundant notes of chocolate, tobacco, and blackcurrant. It is full-bodied, with chewy, polished, and pronounced tannins. Long and intense. This wine is rather tight and astringent on the palate. It needs time to soften. Very well-structured. Made from organically grown grapes. Best after 2025.

Very pure and well-integrated on the palate, it reveals a lovely hint of bitterness, resulting in a wine that is well-balanced between fruit and acidity. They surprise with their imposing yet not overpowering character on the finish. I believe the 2019 Château La Lagune has all the necessary elements to age well in the cellar, though it can also be enjoyed in its youth. The finish is fruity and lingering.
