Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 15.5/20 (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2019 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)
About wine:
Slightly toasty oak notes, a balanced body though less full-bodied than that of its third-growth counterparts; refined but lacking the complexity that the vintage would have allowed.
About the estate:
This wine is one of the least well-known in the ranking, but it boasts excellent vineyards at the heart of its appellation, and its top-tier 2010 vintage demonstrates its potential. Subsequent vintages are more inconsistent; they initially seem a bit thin but develop a lovely balance two years after bottling, with an elegant floral character typical of Margaux.
Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2019 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About the estate:
Overlooking the Route des Châteaux, in the heart of the village of Cantenac, an elegant 18th-century charterhouse, accessed through a majestic pink marble gate, stands guard over this historic estate (17th century), classified in 1855. The estate was acquired in 1980 by Lucien Lurton, who passed it on to his son Denis in 1992 when he divided his vast wine-growing estate among his children.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Wine rated (2020 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2019 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)
About wine:
Without fanfare, the 2016, with its light, airy profile, delights with its exquisite elegance and vibrant fruit. A real gem.
About the estate:
A third-growth Margaux, the château was literally brought back to life by Lucien Lurton in the early 1980s. Since then, it has often disappointed with a wine lacking in body, vigor, and bouquet distinction. But since 2000, it has been steadily improving, showcasing aromatic finesse and a delicate texture—hallmarks of a well-rounded Margaux—with the high proportion of Merlot helping to “round out the edges” of a wine that was once somewhat harsh.

James Suckling
Wine rated (2019 guide) 93/100
About wine:
A superb, very spicy, modern, and full-bodied nose, fragrant with black plum, berries, and chocolate—fresh and well-balanced. The palate offers a firm yet smooth texture with plenty of ripe berries, wrapped in well-integrated spicy oak. A blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot. Best enjoyed starting in 2023.
