Château Kirwan
Château Kirwan owes its name to Mark Kirwan, who, at the end of the 18th century, expanded the vineyard by combining two small adjacent vineyards in the village of Cantenac: the Ganet estate and its Lasalle land. During his visit to Bordeaux in 1787, Thomas Jefferson paid tribute to the quality of the château's wines. Château Kirwan has been owned by the Schÿler family since 1926.
Château Kirwan has a vineyard covering 40 hectares of vines divided into 46 separate plots, and continues to develop its terroir, adapting viticulture to the soil and climate. The vineyard is located on the gravelly hilltop of Cantenac. Viticulture is carried out in a very sustainable manner.
Philippe Delfaut, an experienced oenologist at Margaux, was appointed Managing Director of the estate in 2008, alongside Sophie Schÿler, with a view to further improving the production of Château Kirwan's Grand Cru Classé wines.
