Château Kirwan
Château Kirwan owes its name to Mark Kirwan, who, in the late 18th century, expanded the vineyard by combining two small adjacent plots in the village of Cantenac: the Ganet estate and its Lasalle property. During his visit to the Bordeaux region in 1787, Thomas Jefferson paid high praise to the quality of the Château’s wines. Château Kirwan has been owned by the Schÿler family since 1926.
Château Kirwan owns a 40-hectare vineyard divided into 46 distinct plots and continues to enhance the potential of its terroir by adapting its viticultural practices to the soil and climate. The vineyard is situated on the gravelly ridge of Cantenac, where viticulture is practiced in a highly sustainable manner.
Philippe Delfaut, an experienced oenologist in Margaux, was appointed General Manager of the estate in 2008, alongside Sophie Schÿler, with the aim of continuously improving the production of Château Kirwan’s Grand Cru Classé wines.
