Rated estate (2016 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

Since 1990, this modestly sized estate—though large enough to delight many wine lovers—has been producing a robust Margaux, whose tannic structure perfectly reflects the high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Jean-Luc Zuger, its passionate owner, made an excellent decision in enlisting Michel Rolland, who worked with him to better understand the character of the Médoc’s wines. The most recent vintages are highly recommended, combining power and harmony—exactly what the public rightly desires.

Rated estate (2016 guide): 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

This unassuming little Margaux estate quietly continues to produce some of the appellation’s most endearing and original wines. This success is owed to its owner, Jean-Luc Zuger, who is conscientious and always on the lookout for new avenues to explore. Boasting a remarkable terroir (partly adjacent to Château Margaux), it expresses the smoothness and ripeness of the fruit like no other: the wine consistently shines with its creamy, almost Burgundian texture and refined tannins. The consistency of recent vintages has been impeccable.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 96/100 (Exceptional wine)

About the wine:

A simply breathtaking wine, with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum that unfold with velvety smoothness, while the characteristic notes of iris and violet blend harmoniously into the finish. A long, aromatic finish, with a subtly integrated hint of alder smoke, rounds out the profile. The finish is exceptionally long, supported by lingering fruitiness. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Best enjoyed between 2027 and 2042. 8,364 bottles produced.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 97/100

About the wine:

This wine features pronounced aromas of blackcurrant and blueberry, enhanced by notes of cedar and sandalwood that give it its unique character. Medium- to full-bodied, this wine has well-integrated tannins and a long, linear finish. A touch of liveliness on the finish. An elegant wine. Give it 3 or 4 years to mellow slightly, but it’s already a real pleasure to drink. Best enjoyed after 2029.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 96-97/100

About the wine:

Malescot reveals itself with exceptional subtlety. The bouquet is complex and weaves together a multitude of elements, including notes of Sichuan pepper, eucalyptus, blond tobacco, and flowers—and many more. The attack is inviting thanks to its sweetness. The wine features juicy, smooth tannins and a structuring acidity that lends freshness right through to the finish. The subtle bitterness that emerges on the finish only enhances the aromatic expression and extends the length. A promising wine that excels on multiple fronts, combining delicacy, character, power, and charm. 2028–2052

About the wine:

Deep purple in color with violet highlights and an almost black core. A very expressive nose, evoking incense and oriental spices, supported by aromas of juicy fruit, black berries, and plum. On the palate, there are ripe fruits, ripe yet still firm tannins, as well as excellent structure, beautiful depth, and a long finish. A truly great Malescot.
