“The 2015 Pouget was the biggest surprise of the entire blind tasting. […] The 2015 has an earthy bouquet with hints of forest floor; it’s a bit disjointed at first but comes together with aeration while remaining true to its classic style. The medium-bodied palate offers black and red fruit, fine tannins, and well-balanced acidity. It is full of tension and balance, leading to a finely crafted finish . Excellent.” (Vinous N. Martin – 2019) • Delivered in a wooden crate for any order of 6 bottles of this wine (excluding “Point Relais” delivery method)

Wine rated 17.5/20 (Benchmark wine)

Rated estate (2021 guide): 3*Stars (High-quality production that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the wine:

A full-bodied nose, slightly more roasted than Boyd’s; the breadth and complexity of a great vintage; perfectly classic structure; great potential.

About the estate:

This small cru classé is rarely tasted from the bottle, which is a real shame. A neighbor of Boyd-Cantenac—and in fact owned by the same proprietor—it is vinified separately; there is now very little to distinguish the two crus. The quality of the barrels—long a weak point—has improved significantly over the past five years, even though the oak is still a bit overpowering in the wine when young. The intensive extraction, however, allows it to age gracefully.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine rated (2019 guide) 2*Stars (Outstanding Wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

Initially subtle, the bouquet of this 2015 opens up with aeration to reveal an enticing array of aromas blending red currant jam, plum, and toasty notes. This lovely complexity is reflected on the palate, which is both round and tannic. A superb harmony, beautifully crafted.

About the estate:

Long renowned for its wines—the Marshal-Duke of Richelieu praised their qualities in the 18th century (his coat of arms still appears on the label)—this 10-hectare estate, classified in 1855, became part of the Guillemet (Boyd-Cantenac) family in 1906. Lucien Guillemet has been at the helm since 1996.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 17/20 (Great wine)

Rated Estate (2021 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

A full-bodied Margaux with an imposing structure and plenty of depth and body. The fruit is vibrant and explosive. A wonderful finish.

About the estate:

Pouget is a very small and unassuming classified growth from Margaux, owned—just like Boyd-Cantenac—by Lucien Guillemet. It is vinified in the same spirit as Boyd, though it lacks the latter’s depth and potential. Nevertheless, it remains a very appealing and enjoyable wine. The wine is not sold on the open market, so it is not easy to find.
