Château Prieuré-Lichine
Château Prieuré-Lichine is located in Cantenac in Gironde. A Margaux appellation wine, it is classified as a fourth grand cru in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. Dating back to the 16th century, when it was owned by the clergy, Château Prieuré-Lichine changed hands several times during the 19th and 20th centuries before being purchased in 1951 by Alexis Lichine, a world-renowned critic and authority in the world of wine. Under his leadership, the estate underwent significant expansion and considerable technical improvements, and acquired its current name. Château Prieuré-Lichine was finally sold to the Ballande family, already owners of Château Barec in Pessac-Léognan, on .
The Château Prieuré-Lichine vineyard covers an area of 70 hectares and comprises plots spread across the five communes of the Margaux appellation. The vines are planted with 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand.
The wines of Château Prieuré-Lichine are produced with the utmost care, listening to the terroir and the vines, and managing the diversity of the vineyard's plots as effectively as possible. Stéphane Derenoncourt, the château's oenologist, produces high-quality wines with the help and advice of Michel Rolland . Since 1973, Château Prieuré-Lichine has also been producing a second wine in the Margaux appellation: Château de Clairefon.
