About the estate:
Located near the Moulis train station, Château Maucaillou boasts a rather unusual architectural style, blending Renaissance and 18th-century elements. Owned by the Dourthe family since 1929, Pascal, with the help of his two sisters, Magali and Caroline, took over the reins in 2007, continuing the work begun by their father, Philippe. Since the 2009 vintage, Magali has changed the style of the wines; they are now smoother and more modern than in the past, while remaining robust and suitable for aging.

Produced from a 66-hectare vineyard, 80% of which is planted on gravelly hillsides and 20% on clay-limestone subsoil. Owned by the Dourthe family, this wine is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. The nose is magnificent, with notes of herbs and dried flowers accompanied by fragrant black fruits. Smooth and utterly charming from the very first sip, juicy, lively, and playful—equally sweet, tangy, and creamy, all combining to create a full-bodied sensation on the palate with dense, rich tannins, freshness, and concentration. It is truly captivating and a delicate, flavorful wine. Excellent style, confident and full of character—nothing is missing. Crisp, meaty, and mineral, with a salty, wet-stone finish that I love. 2023–2034

About the estate:
A flagship wine from Moulis, established in 1875 in the Caubet and Maucaillou (meaning “bad rock”) vineyards—a gravelly hilltop unsuitable for growing grain for medieval farmers, but ideal for vines. Owned by the Dourthe family since 1929, this estate has grown from 3.5 hectares at that time to 90 hectares today. Philippe Dourthe, the current owner, has entrusted its management to his three children.

The nose is fruity, offering a refined power, delicate intensity, and concentration. It reveals notes of strawberry, raspberry, and, more subtly, blackcurrant, combined with hints of refined minerality, Sichuan pepper, and violet, as well as subtle hints of spice and chocolate. The palate is fruity and mineral, offering smoothness, a delicate acidity, subtle tension, and precision. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of ripe, juicy blackcurrant, wild strawberry, and, more subtly, small, juicy, crunchy red berries, combined with hints of fresh violet, fresh lilac, and elegant minerality, as well as hints of blackberry, licorice, and vanilla/blond tobacco. The tannins are well-integrated.

And yet I can't give it a 0! There were six of us at the table, and we all had the same thoughts—which are the exact opposite of the comments on the sheet I printed out; whoever wrote them must not have drunk the same wine as us; as for finesse, we’ll pass: this wine is incredibly harsh on the palate; some called it “rough, astringent, undrinkable” (it’s very full-bodied with tannins that are more than just firm and a finish that’s more than rustic: I’m reversing the terms here from the comments on No. 2, which has the same issues); we had opened them in advance and that wasn’t enough; we set them aside and they started to become drinkable (and even then) after two days; personally, I’ve never drunk a wine as unpleasant as this one; are you sure the wine we drank is the one in the reviews, because it’s not possible that professionals could be so wrong. Try it and you’ll see! Unless it’s just the one I received that’s like this. Now, maybe it’s just us who have no taste, but for so many people at the same table at the same time, that would be strange! Please excuse the harshness of my words, but I was very disappointed, especially regarding my guests, whom I had planned to treat.

The velvety texture of the Moulis. Don't hesitate to open a bottle for a small gathering to enjoy with a nice cut of meat. Excellent!!!
