The 2011 Maucaillou reveals a complex and subtle nose, releasing aromas of ripe black fruits (morello cherry, blackberry), licorice, and mocha, enveloped in toasted notes. It offers a beautiful structure on the palate thanks to dense, well-integrated tannins. The wine is well-balanced, elegant, and has a lovely length. A truly beautiful finish!

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2021 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))
About the estate:
Located near the Moulis train station, Château Maucaillou features a rather unusual architectural style, blending Renaissance and 18th-century elements. Owned by the Dourthe family since 1929, Pascal, with the help of his two sisters, Magali and Caroline, took over the reins in 2007, continuing the work begun by their father, Philippe. Since the 2009 vintage, Magali has changed the style of the wines; they are now smoother and more modern than in the past, while remaining robust and suitable for aging.

Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)
About the estate:
A flagship wine from Moulis, established in 1875 in the localities of Caubet and Maucaillou (“bad rock”), a gravelly hilltop unsuitable for growing grain for medieval farmers but ideal for vines. Owned by the Dourthe family since 1929, this estate has grown from 3.5 hectares at that time to 90 hectares today. Philippe Dourthe, the current owner, has entrusted its management to his three children.
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
Wine rated (2012 guide) 16/20 (Very good)
About the wine:
We love the rich, indulgent initial aroma of star anise and licorice, which is quickly joined by the fruit with lovely intensity. The dark fruit flavors come through on the palate, supported by a tight, almost austere structure at this stage.
