"Since last year, this wine performs admirably. A rich bouquet typical of the Médoc. Hints of ink and smoke. Deep and dense on the palate, with a pleasant austerity. It will mellow with time. Those who enjoy full-bodied wines should give this a try. For a velvety texture, it will need a little more time. ” (Jean-Marc Quarin 2021) - Delivered in a wooden case for all orders of 1 magnum of this wine (excluding Point Relais delivery method).

Rated estate (2017 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

The estate’s flagship wine is produced directly across from Château Latour, on perfectly drained gravel soils that benefit from the microclimate of the Gironde riverbanks. Pichon possesses the vigor and power of the greatest Médoc wines, in a very pure style lovingly overseen by Jean-René Matignon, one of the most experienced technical directors in the Bordeaux region. All recent vintages are remarkable, sharing the same classic character derived from the dominant Cabernet Sauvignon and the mineral and graphite notes of the terroir. The second wine, Tourelles, has improved significantly, but the real novelty is the introduction of another wine, Griffons, in 2012, made from young vines in prime terroirs, and highly successful.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2017 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

The original vineyard was established in the 17th century by Jacques de Pichon, Baron de Longueville. Divided in two in 1850, part of the estate went to Raoul de Pichon-Longueville (the other part becoming Pichon Comtesse), who had the current château built there. Inspired by the château at Azay-le-Rideau, the building contrasts with the horizontal lines of the winery built after the estate was purchased in 1987 by Axa Millésimes. The insurer undertook major renovation work there, led by Jean-Michel Cazes, then by Christian Seely, with Jean-René Matignon overseeing technical management. Since 2001, the selection policy has been intensified: only 40 hectares of the 73 that make up this exceptional terroir—composed of fine Garonne gravel and located immediately adjacent to Latour—are now used for the grand vin.

Wine rated (2018 guide) 96/100

Rated estate (2017 guide): 3 stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)

About the wine:

Here it is once again at the top of its game, with exceptional body, density, and depth. A vibrant and incredibly persistent wine. A must-try from this vintage!

About the estate:

This magnificent Second Growth has produced a series of truly stunning wines and has established itself at the very top of the Médoc hierarchy. Impossible to miss from the Château Route, the sumptuous estate of "Pichon Baron" has been completely renovated from top to bottom in less than two decades, and the team led by Christian Seely is doing exemplary work that has propelled Pichon Baron to the pinnacle of Médoc wines. The winemaking facilities and aging cellar, along with the vineyard—which has been extensively replanted—have enabled the estate to achieve a historic level of quality in recent vintages. Note that the second wine is now called Les Griffons de Pichon Baron, as Les Tourelles has become a separate brand with its own independent vineyard.

James Suckling

Wine rated (2017 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

Intense bouquet. This is a rich, tannic wine that becomes increasingly smooth and complex as it coats the palate. It is a concentrated, full-bodied wine that requires patience but should richly reward it.

Le Figaro Wines

Le Figaro vins

Wine rated (2015 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

Made from the heart of the old vines, the wine has a deep black color. It is dense and concentrated, with a touch of velvety smoothness; the Merlot rounds out the mid-palate, the tannins are fine, and the finish is long and elegant, with a superb mid-palate. Beautiful depth. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 94/100

About the wine:

The bouquet is strongly influenced by the Pauillac terroir, with notes of graphite and cedar. Inviting aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, eucalyptus, and a hint of licorice. On the palate, the tannins are silky and perfectly integrated, providing excellent structure throughout the mouthfeel. I’m surprised by how approachable the 2014 Pichon Baron is right now, but it’s no less complex!

About the wine:

Since last year, this wine has been performing admirably. It has a rich bouquet typical of the Médoc, with hints of ink and smoke. On the palate, it is deep and dense, with a pleasant austerity. It will mellow over time. Those who prefer a powerful wine should give it a try. For a velvety texture, however, you’ll have to wait a little longer.

Wine rated (2016 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

A beautiful, rich, and fresh nose—delicate and fruity with elegant floral notes. The palate is well-structured, with tannins that are slightly tighter than in previous vintages, leading to a very pleasant floral finish. A fine wine with a distinct character. Let it have time to develop.
