Wine rated 15/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide): 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)

About the wine:

A delicately spicy and fruity nose with notes of warm stone; very refined on the palate, with a flavorful body, silky tannins, and an excellent, fresh finish. Pure elegance.

About the estate:

In 1970, the sisters of the Holy Family Community decided to enhance the value of their vineyard assets by bringing in outside experts. Since 1993, under the leadership of Olivier Bernard (Domaine de Chevalier), who leased the estate’s land for forty years, a long-term renovation project has been underway. Today, the estate has firmly established itself among the leading Pessac-Léognan producers. The wines—both red and white—are consistently expressive, with an aromatic intensity that never disappoints; they are powerful, with good aging potential for the reds, yet also elegant, fresh, and well-balanced. These are wines of character that certainly make an impression.

Rated Estate (2022 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the excellence of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

The 2016 vintage is a success, making the most of the vintage’s balanced character, with lovely length and fruit that remains very fresh.

About the estate:

Run since 1993 by Olivier Bernard (Domaine de Chevalier), Domaine de la Solitude—a long-standing estate in Martillac owned by the religious community of the Holy Family—has consistently produced wines of very respectable quality. The whites are approachable and delicious; the reds, which can be enjoyed for their fruitiness, age well over the course of a decade. Prices remain very affordable.

Review and comment by Mr. GILLES D. Published on August 12, 2022

Its understated and elegant presentation is reminiscent of its connection to the illustrious Domaine de Chevalier. It offers delightful aromas of humus dotted with small wild berries. Blessed with an exceptional 2016 vintage, the palate is dense and full-bodied, featuring dark fruits (plum, blackberry, blueberry), followed by a hint of spice, all enhanced by tannins with a refined texture. The fresh finish is accented by notes of mocha and toast. T.B. R. Q/P. The special attention Olivier BERNARD devotes to winemaking and aging makes this a cuvée well-suited for cellaring. Best enjoyed with venison. Rating: 4.2.
