Pessac-Léognan Wine: A One-of-a-Kind Wine

The Pessac-Léognan Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) is a wine appellation in the Bordeaux region. The Pessac-Léognan AOC was established in September 1987 within the ancient Graves region of Bordeaux. Pessac-Léognan is undoubtedly the exact birthplace of viticulture in Bordeaux, dating back 2,000 years. As early as Roman times, people had realized that this terroir—which encompasses all of the region’s classified growths (Crus Classés) in the Graves—was particularly well-suited to viticulture. The area under cultivation quickly expanded to 1,600 hectares, and its annual production stands at nearly 70,000 hectoliters. Among the most renowned Pessac-Léognan wines is Château Haut-Brion, the only Premier Cru Classé from the 1855 classification not located in the Médoc. Other estates are no less remarkable: Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Château Pape Clément, Domaine de Chevalier, Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion, and Château Haut-Bailly.

Carefully Selected Grape Varieties

The Péssac Léognan AOC is one of the few appellations that includes a wide variety of grape varieties. Grown on the left bank of the Garonne, these varieties offer similar flavors despite their different genetic makeup.

Currently, there are nine main grape varieties used in the production of the Pessac-Léognan vintage:
  • Cabernet Franc;
  • Cabernet Sauvignon;
  • Le Côt;
  • Malbec;
  • Merlot;
  • Muscadelle;
  • Petit Verdot;
  • Sauvignon;
  • Sémillon.
Harvested by hand, the grapes are then left to ferment in the ancient vats of the Château Coucheroy Pessac-Léognan AOC. True to tradition, the winemakers follow the same time-honored practices established by their predecessors centuries ago.
A wine with great aging potential

Despite the passage of time, this process has lost none of its effectiveness. As a result, Pessac-Léognan red wines retain all of their tannins for 7 to 20 years. For certain Pessac-Léognan vintages, the aging potential is much greater.

As for white wines, the experts at Château Coucheroy Pessac-Léognan AOC recommend storing them for no more than 2 to 5 years. Of course, some vintages may age more delicately; in fact, they can be cellared for 10 to 15 years.

Pessac-Léognan Wine: Unmistakable Among Thousands

The soils of Pessac-Léognan wines consist of a particularly thick layer of gravel and pebbles rounded by water, known as “graves.” This layer rests on a substrate of sand, alios, and clay in varying proportions. The vineyards occupy vast clearings surrounded by pine trees, which provide ideal protection from the moisture-laden westerly winds. The AOC produces Pessac-Léognan red wines made primarily from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They boast a cherry-red color with black undertones. Their aroma reveals notes of ripe red fruits and violets, supported by a smoky bouquet of toasted almonds and resin. These are rich and elegant wines, possessing great nobility and good structure; they can be enjoyed in their youth but also demonstrate excellent aging potential. The dry white wines of the Pessac-Léognan appellation are generally a fairly pale straw yellow, often resulting from their aging in oak barrels. Their aroma is dominated by Sauvignon, the appellation’s dominant grape variety, which brings freshness and fruitiness—whether or not blended with Sémillon, which adds richness through its unique aromas of candied fruit. Pessac-Léognan white wines are complex, full-bodied, round, and almost sweet, even though they are very dry.
